B17 flying today

I know, I posted about it before, I just have to marvel at seeing something from so long ago, to know and have a slight idea as to what it was like, it just passed about 500' over my house, did a banking turn and headed in, too quick to get a video, thing just rolls up on me, 2nd time today saw it before I went out to run errands on an earlier flight. It probably has 1 or 2 flights left today, then its on display til the next day or show, one of these years I need to come up with the fee to fly in it, hats off to those aviation guys back then, one just had to be fearless and have unreal patriotism in their blood.

Fearsome looking bird.

I get to see it every year during EAA. It flys over our shop 5-6 times every day. Sometimes it's only at about 400ft. They keep it at the Outagaime County airport in Greenville Wi. near Appleton. This year Fifi was also flying there and a couple times a Mitchel went over. Both of them were also very low. It's a very interesting week. We see a lot of everything.

My uncle worked for the Glenn L Martin company in Baltimore during WW2 building the B-29 Flying Fortresses. He had polio when was kid, that didn't stop him from working. They may have made other planes. Hal

thanx billy,,,.That awesome bird will come home with 1 engine, if the pilot was well versed ,, holes punched thru wings, fuselage and tail shot to hale , and they would still bring the crews back home .. , the c 130 flies over us a lot on way to ft knox,, I call them the dc case or 4020 of the skies ,,. my mother and aunts built airplanes at Curtis /wright louisvile durin WW2

Had one fly over me to air show long time ago living in Indianapolis go into MT comfort air show. It literally shook the ground. Watched one take off from there too, takes a looooonnnggg runway :)

Got to crawl through one once. Took a student on a night cross country with one of the stops at Ellington Field in Houston. We were marveling at it on the ramp and the guys told us to come on in and check it out. They were replacing the carb on #2. We through it one end to the other and took plenty of time to do it. Just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

Been in several but never flew in one although I've flown with dozens of guys who flew them in WW II (The Big One). Hap Arnold told Charles Lindbergh: "Combat squadrons greatly prefer the B-17 to the B-24 because when we send the 17s out on a mission, most of them return. When we send the 24s out, most of them don't".

I've been watching the METV channel where they have the older programs so many on here like too. One of my favorites was 12 O' Clock High. Is this the same airplane the squadron featured flew? I'm 56 so many of these shows were right in their prime when I was 6-7 years old. I still remember being mesmerized.

I have a book entitled "Ghosts In The Sky". Stories pilots will tell other pilots, but not non-pilots for fear of being called a nutcase.

The book mentions one B-17 that came back to its field in England after a mission to Germany. It came back in formation, landed perfectly, and taxied to its parking stall. The engines shut down, but nobody emerged from the plane. When the plane was entered, it was found out that ALL of the crew were dead, pilot included, and had been for quite some time.

After the rescue crews departed with the bodies, the plane combusted and burned to the ground.

Try to explain that. The author of the book solicited stories from pilots, and discarded 90% of his responses. He put into the book only stories for which there was absolutely no explanation.

You must be thinking of another movie. 12 O'clock
High was a first world war movie. I also think it
may have received the very first Oscar for best
picture but can't recall off the top of my head. It
was my dad's favorite movie and one of the reasons
he transfered to the air force when he signed up for
WW II. He was a tail gunner in a Halifax bomber and
the only survivor of his crew.

This was a weekly show that came on. METV is a channel that shows the older re-run shows like batman that came on every week. Some really good stuff on there like the original Star Trek series etc. The first year of the 12 O Clock High had Robert Lansing and he did an excellent job.

4 days ago - ... the World War II B17, the Memphis Belle, in Albany on Monday. ... Morrow's plane was shot down during its last bombing run, landing ... Belle at Albany International Airport Monday afternoon. Billy try this!????

im enjoying watching 12 oclock high too, only big i have on the shows is continuity of aircraft for example col. galager taking off in a early model b-17 and then landing from the same mission in a g model with the chin turrett lol and the times he flies a p-51, lol takes off in windowed canopy c model and while in flight he's flying a d model withthe bubble canopy , a pretty obvious difference, otherwise the show is great wish they had more of them

My Uncle was a belly gunner on a B-17. Was shot down in April 1944. He did not make it. I was four month old.

Love those old planes. They fly into a little airport for a 3 day desplay a few miles from where I live. I take my grand son to see them.I have also seen the B 17 fly over my place. I think it costs around 450.00 for a short flight in a B 17. While in the Navy our patrol squadron still had prop driven planes. A thing of the past now. Stan

My dad was ground crew for the B-17. He was based at Polebrook, England for four years. Him and his buddies use tell a lot of stories about what happened over there . Tried to get them to write a book about it but they wouln't do it.

I flew on the Liberty Belle a couple of years before it burned. Loud and rough, surprisingly cramped space inside. No regrets at spending the money.

My son and I went to the airshow at St Thomas Ontario this year to see a B-17.They are indeed a very impressive bird.It was a great show with the B-17 (Sentimental Journey) and a Mustang flying escort all painted up like the Tuskegee Red Tail squadron. They also did a rescue demonstration with a Hercules dropping rescuers and supplies to a pair of "stranded and injured" hikers followed by a demonstration of just how short a runway the Hercules could be landed on.

About 20 years ago a Lancaster did a very slow and low turn beside our house during Sunday breakfast. My son ran out in his jammies and the plane was so close he could see the aircrew waving back to him.It made an airplane fan for life of him.He saw the Lancaster at the museum in Hamilton just before its accident. Now that is an impressive plane.
