CERTAINLY you can use a more modern cylinder with an older tractor. Size it (diameter-wise in relation to the load you are lifting vs. desired speed. A LARGE-bore cylinder will lift a heavier machine, but mover SLOWER than a smaller cylinder lifting an appropriate load.

On the other hand, the old cast-iron DEERE cylinders of the 2-cylinder era can"t take the pressure when used with NEWER machines with 2000 to 3000 PSI hydraulics.
