Deer, food plots, and corn.

With only 5 more days till deer season opens the only thing that is planted in our food plots is one of our 4020's. It has been bogged down in the middle of one for two weeks. We have had 6in. since then.
Talked to my brother about picking our corn and he told me that He was headed to the farm this morning to put duals on the combine. He said that most people in our area were putting tracks on there's. His other thought was to fix ours so we could push it with the bulldozer.

I can't imagine hunting deer this time of year, especially down your way, being so warm, biting insects, you have little time to butcher, unless you have a refrigerated or cold room. As much as I hate the bitter cold, its nice to be in the high 20's or low 30's, as long as you are moving, have a place to warm up when taking a break.... cutting them warm, the fat is so slimy. I like to let the carcass cool, after skinning, using the natural refrigerator, get it done then head over by the stove for a cold one, and cuts off the grill !

Amen! November is for deer hunting, with a heated stand of course! Besides if you shot a nursing doe now the fawns would probably die. And the bucks antlers are not fully developed and still have velvet. We need to shoot some does in N MN, there are getting to be too many deer again. Lots of twins and we saw triplets last week.

I would imagine, and maybe Ron will fill us in on it, the southern states, things are much earlier, biologically, just the warmer weather occurs, when the northern areas we are used to things happen like rut when the cold temperatures are present, though we do get some warm days, soon as that sun goes down, its usually cool. I last a few hours in my stand in the am and either go off on foot or head back in, usually the latter as I hate pushing them, I'd rather wait til the afternoon and let them, do what they do, wait for one that looks good to take. Last year a long time friend had to come over and take one in miserable weather, his dad made off with most of his venison, so he had to fill his tag quickly or go without, no stand hunting that day would have produced.

Where in N MN are you Russ?
It doesn't look like an abundance of deer in much of the northern end of the state judging by them still have doe lottery there.
Map is of the 2013 deer zones.
I hunt in area 155 - hunter's choice again this year but no bonus deer.

I hope that is not your big tractor, I try to avoid getting the biggest tractor stuck, so it can pull out the other one.

Billy...next week we will start taking does (with rifle) to fill requirements of farm agriculture tags in my area.....farmers are issued a # of tags based on a particular farm....they have to fill them by Sept. 15 (opening of bow season)......

I don't like hot weather hunting, but am able to get deer for the freezer and can then concentrate on big bucks with the bow for a few months before gun season starts.

Its hot, humid, miserable and bug infested. No shooting does till the middle of the season. I always heard that the politicians liked to have the season open early to shoot a big buck in velvet. No doesn't make sense to me either. I would rather have it start later and have another month on the end. When it finally gets cold enough to enjoy hunting. I generally don't go till about 6 to 8 weeks into the season. Last year I did not get one. Luckily my Son did and had the whole thing ground up thinking one of us would get another to have steak to put in the freezer. In fact we are having some for supper that is two seasons old. Sure would love to come up there and hunt with yall Particularly in Jerry's Condo stand..:)

Regarding nursing fawns, they can survive without Momma after about 10 weeks, but if allowed to, will nurse up to 6 months or until the doe goes into heat again......

No still have a 4320 that's not stuck Yet. I am afraid we might have to use My youngest brothers FWA 6610 Ford. I think that's what we are going to use to pull the corn Picker.

In velvet, its not even fully developed yet, odd fetish if you ask me. I don't really hunt for horns, its food and something to be very thankful for, not a trophy. There are some larger bucks here, but you just do not see them very often, you could put an effort in to track one or pattern one, but it has to be on your land, or you will have to go over the boundaries, even with all the cover here, you need to have something to attract them and the only time I saw that is when there was lots of forage, like 60-70 acres of oats, the regrowth after harvest.

Thats a good thing if overpopulated, you can take advantage of the harvest and even if we had it here like that, 2 is sufficient, 3 is plentiful, sure takes the pressure off you for the later season, if you get that nice buck great, or just let em pass if younger ones are all that you see, you already have your meat. If others did that here, you would see the more mature ones, which are always nice to see and take if possible. We do get enough permits for does and that is mostly what you see, so I take more of those, and skip the smaller bucks. For me, I don't seem to care much, sometimes when its sunny and not so cold, its just great to be out there, watching "the show" !

If beans I could see the necessity in getting them out. Otherwise unless I had corn contracts to fill, would wait till it freezes or dries. Canada has a snow issue so they might also be inclined to get it out, however I've always thought they should still be planting wheat rather than chasing for a few more dollars in the more marginal areas.

We hunt in 103, and just the northern edge is in agriculture, so that is where the deer are. They won't give bonus tags until it gets more overpopulated than this. A few years age we got land owner permits + a bonus tag on top of our regular tag. These pictures were taken this morning 4 miles south of the Canadian border.
