New Idea Picker Sheller

Just wondering how the New Idea 324 or 325 2 row picker shellers are? I was thinking about getting one on down the road so I could make things a little easier (could retire the JD 43 sheller) Do they work and shell good? Never been around one so just checking out the bad and good with them. I currently have a one row 323 NI picker that does a good job.

I have found two of the 324 snapping and 319 Super Sheller units, one for my neighbor and one for me. I have not used mine but the neighbor has used his a couple of years now. It works great. The cobs come out really clean and the corn in the bin is clean free of foreign matter. You have to drive slow so it depends on how many acres you have if it is right for you.
I would suggest you have dealer to can depend on to find you parts when needed. Many of the sheet metal parts are no longer available. The bearings are common bearings and available. I have had to rebuild a gear box, and replace a few bearings, so far all the parts I needed could be found. So you might want to buy a newer one. Great machine. Paul

The big thing how slow can your tractor go they were not made for todays corn yeilds. Have a friend that has the two row picker with 12 roll bed and needs to clutch the tractor in good corn 200 bu yeild pulls with 4020. Now add sheller and more load on the unit.Need something like 806 with TA

I do not know what model but have a two row picker sheller and seems like the auguer that takes the corn up to the wagon gets loaded pretty quick . We always shell 40 to 50 acres a year with the unit. Run it behind a 85 hp 4 wheel tractor.

With your current sheller are you shelling it direct from the picker or from a crib? If from the crib then the corn has probably dried down. So if you are planning on storing to shell for later use with the picker sheller then you will need a way to dry it to store. And I have never seen any 200 bu corn, here that would be a pipe dream.

You'll want to find a 32x gathering unit with the bigger 329 sheller unit, which is better able to handle modern yields vs. the smaller 315 sheller unit.

Cage type sheller similar to your stationary sheller and typically gives a superior product. The smaller model 314 sheller would be decent match for your single row but since it wasn't designed for a single row you would need to do some fabrication. Advantage is that they are cheap, around scrap price. Some complain the NI snapping rolls shell and lose too much corn. I've never seen that as a problem with my 331 and 329 sheller. Capacity is more of a concern. One needs to travel pretty slow in 200 bu corn with three rows gathering unit. A two row version (324/325) with the 329 I venture would be a good match. The NI sheller is similar to the old Ottawa design that uses a manually adjustable flow retarder. MM shellers used a retarder that automatically adjusted to the flow; a better design. However in today's high yielding corn I set the retarder fully open to get the maximum capacity and haven't noticed more loss in the lower yielding areas. But didn't use last year when the drought resulted in localized areas of 160 bu corn and significant areas of 90 bu corn. Probably would have set the retarder to handle the 90 bu areas and slowed down in the higher yielding corn.

oh going slow is no problem, the NH8260 just happen to come with a creeper tranny in it!!!

James, I wasn't going to add it to my picker i have now, I was going to get another one so I could use the one I have to pick ear corn with. Last year my corn was about 95 bu/acre but that was only one ear to the stalk, this year i changed brand and varieties and I have at least 2 good ears and sometimes 3 ears per stalk. i'll keep this info in mind when I get one.
