What is eating my half ripe tomatoes? I have rabbits and chipmunks, but seem to be leaving the tomatoes alone. It eats about half of the tomato and then goes to the next. Any ideas?

Hornworms/tomato worms maybe.
They're hard to see even though they're FAT.

I have heard of rabbits and groundhogs doing that. Mice will nibble on them too but probably don't eat half of one.

Squirrels do that to mine. Also if close to ground, terrapins will just eat about half, but never go back to one they have eaten off of.

Friend just told me tonight that deer are taking a bite or two out of all his tomatoes and leaving the rest.

I have my tomatoes in heavy wire cages made from heavy reinforcement wire. I now wrap the bottom of each cage with narrow mesh wire about two feet high. I caught one groundhog in my trap and hauled him away. About 4 miles. Not sure if you can see the narrow mesh wire in these pictures. Hal
PS: If you look close you can see the wire.

I found a few years ago, starlings LUV tomato worms. Too bad they want them prepicked. My uncle and I was putting them out in the driveway to step on them. When we came back with some more the first batch was gone. So we laid out the second batch, went into the garage to watch and here came a starling! Didn't even land just swoop and it was gone. We didn't bother smooshing the worms after that, just let the birds take care of them.

Chipmunks will do that, I seem to have eradicated the, but they travel through the cyclone fence in my garden, and test the cherry tomatoes.

have seen this happen in my garden. Pulled in with headlights on 'bright' & deer stood frozen in the headlights with green tomato in her mouth. Caught her red-handed or green-mouthed, whichever way to say it.

Horn worms eat the leaves off the plant.I have never seen them eat the tomato itself. They also love green tobacco. We used to have to go through the field and had pick them off the plants.

I don't know if they will eat a ripe one, but they will definitely eat on the green ones. Seen it happen dozens of times.

Squirrels eat ours !
Wife is mad, because I put out a few peanuts, for
the Squirrels each morning..they come to the
window and beg for them.
