Crop dusting

I live in central Iowa and the sky is full of dusting planes. Does anyone know what they are trying to kill? It appears that they are spraying beans, but cannot rule out corn

Could be- Spider mites, Aphids, Japanese beetles or a Fungicide for plant diseases this time of year.

Or all of the above.

As Gary says, there are many bugs of late that attack soybeans. Wasn't an issue 10 years ago, at least only very rarely.

As well there are a number of fungicide products that some really like, some consider to be foo foo, but lot of folk are trying. Nose so on corn.

Top center of Illinois the two weeks prior to this there's been a yellow plane and a helicopter spraying all around here. I asked my neighbor what they were trying to kill and he thought it was for some bug that eats the silk of the corn.

IA Roy so you don't appear Uninformed, Hardly anyone sprays Dust anymore the correct term is "Spray Planes" !An as the others have said myriad of problems... Mites, Aphids, Beetles, Fungi problems there is No One answer in any given area!
OBTW
I have lost 3 friends in Spray Plane Accidents.
Worst one was when the pilot, Cane up on the end of a turn row, Pulled the plane straight up, Pulled a Hammer Head turn, And rode a Pawnee straight into the ground. He was spraying Azidrine to kill Spider Mites, back in the late 80s that wAS SOME OF THE MOST DEADLY, stuff sprayed at out place, we figure he took a dose of drift and it got him.
We would not even be near when it was being sprayed,
Any way too much info...

if its a yellow plane, bet its an Air Tractor built just 30 min from me here in TX been on the news here lately as they just bulit their 3000 plane. they are shipped all over the world
cool planes

I saw them spraying wheat this year. Also heard they are experimenting planting beans from the air.

I think your right about the yellow plane, it looks like the AT 502 b or 802 a. It sounds like it's almost all motor. Bet I wasted an hour watching that guy in the last couple of weeks, he's sprayed the fields on all sides of my yard.

Met a lot pilots over the years. But met very few old crop dusters or air show pilots. My good friend Elliot is retired airshow pilot and pushing 60 he is one of the few. But I could never fault a man for doing what he loved to do. News is full of write ups about Tony Stewart breaking his leg in a sprint car this week in Iowa. He knew the risk when he strapped in. Said his championship chances are over for this year o well that's what these people do. Race car or high performance aircraft they know the risk when they get in it. Sometimes I envy them.

mites in the beans just east of you in Johnson Co They have sprayed every field of beans in this neighborhood

I enjoy watching the crop duster that's got his home base just a short flight to the south of me. Last year they blocked off my road 1 mile to the south, and he'd land and refuel/refill right there. Was going at it all day long for a couple days straight. Must've been too wet to get out there.

This year was a very wet spring. Now it's getting pretty dry and we could use some rain.

Thanks for the information.
I have never heard the term Spray Planes.
Most of the planes are Air Tractors. There has been a biplane in the area also.

There's a yellow one around here, I swear that guy pulls up off the end of the field, hangs it from the prop, and slides it sideways to turn it around.

I like watching them too.

Boss' dad tells on having some milo sprayed one year, the plane came in with milo hanging off the landing gear. Claimed he was going across the field and forgot the pivot was there and went under it. If he did he had her on the ground at speed.
