Ferguson PTO Conversion

Hi it's Bryce. I have my Ferguson TO-30 torn apart in the shop for restoration, and am needing you guys opinion on something. This old tractor has the 1 1/8 pto shaft, the tractor came with a very old snow-blower, and a ford 501 mower. Both implements have the square tube pto shaft, with 1 1/8 U joints. I have other implements that I would like to use with the Ferguson, and other tractors that I would kinda like to use with the snow-blower, but can't decide what to do. Here are my options: 1, Change the PTO shaft in the Ferguson to 1 3/8, and also change the U joints on all the implements. 2, I could buy one of those slip on conversions that allows me to easily switch the tractor from 1 1/8 to 1 3/8. Option 2 seems easier and less costly, but what I am wondering is if the slip on converter weakens the PTO somehow, and also if I can find a 1 3/8 to 1 1/8 converter for my other tractors so that I could use them with the implements. WHAT SHOULD I DO!! Thanks, Bryce

I had a 1- 1/8 to 1- 3/8 adapter on my N Ford many years ago- unless the PTO work was really light duty, the adapter usually came out in pieces when I took the implement off. Could have been due to excessively worn shaft or coupler making the whole lash-up too loose, but it wasn't a very good situation. I'd just change everything to 1- 3/8 while you've got the tractor apart, and be done with it.

Hi, years ago we had the opposite problem. We had a Ford 8N then traded for JD420 so had to use a 13/8 to 11/8 adapter on the Ferguson rake for many years.
Had no problems other than it extended the PTO shaft by a couple inches and you had to may sure with 3pt implements that the PTO shaft had sufficient clearance.

Change the shaft on the tractor. i think a new PTO shaft for my te20 came to 180 bucks with shipping from the states. completely worth it, and it would be quite simple to change the implements PTO shafts.

Complete 1 3/8 shaft with new bearings and seal is about $100 bucks.
You can get them right here on YT: Shaft
Another option is to buy an Over Running Coupler, which I would
recommend regardless of size if you are running a rotary mower.
They can be bought with built in adapter up or down.
It does add about 4-6 inches to the length of the shaft though.

I'll second that! 8)

You probably were using the sleve adaptor that doesn't change the shaft length as they liked to do that. Had to use that type with the 38 JD A and the AC 60 combine as you did not dare to put the shaft extender type on. That step down version I have as well as the step up version, only use the step up version in extender with the Ferguson 30 on that combine and the step down on a sprayer pump. Some of thos implements he has the only way to change shaft size would be to cut and weld.
