MOUNT STERLING, Ill. (WGEM) -

A farm accident claims the life of a rural Mt. Sterling man and seriously injures his son.

The Brown County Sheriff's Office says it happened just before 6 p.m. Thursday on 900 North Avenue.

Authorities say 91-year-old James Howell and his son 62-year-old Tony Howell were working on a tractor inside a shed when the vehicle started in gear and struck both men.

James Howell was killed.

Tony Howell was airlifted to St. John's Hospital in Springfield.

Sorry to read about that. Very sorry.

The last thing that I do before climbing down from a tractor, is rattle the shift lever from side to side to make sure its not in gear. Its also the first thing that I do before I touch anything else after approaching a tractor. I was surprised once when I climbed onto a tractor, grabbed the lever and it was in gear. I knew better, climbed down, went in the house and pointed that out, asking "Who...?". I got some sheepish looks before gettin an admission of "I did it".

Before climbing off, shift lever from side to side to insure its not in gear. Same thing after first approaching before touching anything else. Every time.

Sorry to hear about James Howell the elderly man in Illinois and his son Tony.

I'm still alive and well down here in Texas.

Thanks for your concern.
