Walk behind sickle mower

I am going to an auction Sunday that has a Troy Bilt walk behind sickle mower. I am thinking it would be a handy thing to mow around the apple trees in the old orchard, and around fence lines. I know these are no longer built but from what I can see there are still parts available. I have never run one and am wondering if anyone has experience with them and could tell me if they are handy or not. Thank you very much.

Not sure what brand we rented in 1978, but it worked really well! Dad bought a foreclosed house and it had 6 foot tall weeds. Rented one like you describe and it was the cats meow!!!

If they are anything like the Jaris of old, better stop at the dentist first and get checked for loose fillings!

Mom and dad bought one in about 1990. I used the snot out of it and it worked great. I think they still have it but without me to run it it sits mostly :)

I have a Jari like you are describing and I had a lot of hours on it when I bought it. I have used it to cut weeds along the fence line and around the hay stack. For the little that I have used it I am certainly glad the I bought the one I did. I cut weeds 3 feet tall and it never even slowed down.

My Grandad had something like that back in the 50's. The sickle was in the center in front of the engine and pretty long handlebars. He rigged up a little two wheel dolly with an old Farmall seat on it and hooked it behind the mower and had the first riding mower in the area.

They are like all sickle bar mowers. It really depends on what you want to cut. Thick stemmed grass and weeds cut well. Fine short grass does not cut well. Also the sickle being centered in front of the power unit sometimes causes issues with the falling cut material.

You will not have time to try one out before your auction. I would really recommend renting one and trying it out before buying one but you don't have time for that.

So it comes down to what you have to mow. If it is shorter fine grass then you will not like them. IF it is taller coarser grass and weed then it will serve you well.

I have a Troy-Built walk behind sickle-bar mower. Handy, useful machine. I must admit mine gets used in the worst conditions possible (banks too steep to walk across, etc.). Mine throws the left drive belt and I can't see why. Ends up being one-wheel drive!

There was a Troy Built like that that sold at auction last month. Sold for $900.00. It was in very good conditions, but they didn't start it.

I bought one at a threasheree fleamarket a year ago, $150, like new, but had broken sickle, got new one for $150, now works great, will cut just about anything. was trimming around stuff in the yard, bumped up against a tire and it sliced the sidewall. works great trimming under pasture fences. easily replaced weedeater, lots faster. downside is if you have to backup to goaround something, grass catches on the sickle skids when you pull it back.dont think its something my wife could handle because of that

Interesting.
I too ran a Jari the summer of 1970.
Ran it a lot at a resort where I worked.
It was a good machine.
In about 1988 I pulled an old David Bradley walk behind sickle out of a hedgerow for free.
Repowered it with a newer B&S and did a lot of cutting with it.
I see those from time to time at tractor swap meets.
Not quite as manuverable as the Jari but did ok.
