Tire Blow Out

Had a tire on boat trailer blow out on the way back from the Ozarks this morning, it blew the fender right off the trailer. It was about 3-4 miles after starting, and right on the Grand Glaise bridge.

It seems this is not uncommon, and it is good to replace the tires every few years.

Seems like I see a lot of trailers along side the road, one side flat. Trailer tires just don"t seem to last a long time. I make it a point to have a spare, jack, and wrench on board. Way too late to go looking for a new tire & wheel, miles form nowhere!

David,

Hope you got things fixed and that the rest of the trip home was uneventful.

Just had a thought...did you ever know anyone named Levsen from Mt. Vernon?

I know what your talking about . I went home to Eldon ,Mo. the last of April , started back to Az. about 10 days later . Just west of Yates Center Kansas I blew a Right Tire on my Camping Trailer tore out the Right fender well out , some electrical outlets , Both Bench Seats . Did about $3400. dollars of damage.
Jus on the West outskirts of Albuquerque had another one same side but no damage from that one. Its a tandem axle . Drove on in to Grants ,New Mexico bought another tire. Told the Wife it could have been a lot worse .

My E mail Address is [email protected]

my boat trailer did that last year...I carry a two ton floor jack and a bottle jack, needed it that night. good luck trying to buy a nice looking boat trailer fender somewhere, got a cheap aftermarket on mine for now, ugly

I read where trailer tires fail from tread separation due to turning while backing them up. You wouldn't think that would put that force on them. I dunno???

Most trailer tires fail because people do not air them up before starting a trip. The other reason is they get old, after five years a tire is on borrowed time and that means any high speed tire. I pealed one on the pickup and I was on the road 1 mile when it let go, according to the date stamp, it was 10 years old and way over 1/2 tread.

Hope you had a spare. But if you did not you probably could have called me and I could have come up with one. M=By the way I forgot to have you sign my Y-T log book when you stopped in

Sounds like no one was hurt, that's good. The day I bought my 96 Dodge 3500, I was on my way home, when one of the rear tires blue apart. It tore the fiber glass duley fender to pieces. I had to find another. That just added a couple hundred bucks to the price of the truck. Stan

If you didn't pay old for his 50 cent tour, he probably knifed it!

Did you steal all the toilet paper out of his bathroom? That probably explains it!

Glad you didn't end up in a tank slapper and off the bridge. I hate it when tires blow on the road. Newer tires really don't hold up to highway speeds like the old ones do, when they get old. It's cost cutting everywhere... We have gotten ourselves into a situation where a tire costs as much as a mortgage payment, and lasts about as long(about 30 days, or until your next mortgage payment).

Guessing you made it home, so I am glad everyone is safe. Sorry to hear of your luck!

Just a little more excitement for the week, huh?

Hope the rest of the trip home was uneventfull.

MIL had something weird happen to her coming back from Florida a few years ago with a 26' 5th wheel camper. She had the rear tires on both sides blow out at the same time. One side took out the fender. She claims she didn't hit anything and the front tire on each side was fine. Still wonder how that could have happened.

Blew one on my 5th wheel camper a few years back. Pretty much exactly 6 yrs old. When they hit that mark they blow cuz most are the cheapest (Carlisle) the factory can find and sized just to the max for load. Mine did $1600 in damage. Put on Maxxis If you want the best. Not cheap but not Wally cheapos either. Oh, and mine were covered in the summer, trailer stored inside in the winter, and aired up correctly. Speed is a factor too. Many are only rated for 65 mph max!
