saw Eldon put his onion crop on the wagon inside the barn to dry,I have some on a table in my garage here in nj,but I put what was left on the old wagon, thanks for the idea!It seemed to be a good saeson for onions ,we ate some ,gave a lot to friends, some rotted because I left them in the ground to long, but we had plenty,so I am happy. The shed is open in the front,so I put the onions toward the back, well see how it works this weekend ,if the onions are still there, lol

Works well, BTDT.

Also good for "curing" potatoes - except sometimes barn critters will help themselves to a spud or two.

Should work fine. My Dad had a small shed that he dried onions in. He framed a piece of wire about 4'x 6' with wooden strips and suspended it from the rafters about 5' high, therefore it had plenty of air circulation, didn't get too hot, and made it quite difficult for critters to get to them.

I am in my second year of raising onions I see they left the stalk on them is this better for drying/curing? always looking for ways to improve shelf life last year I put them in panty hose with a knot between each onion and hung them thanks for any suggestions

I made some fixtures for drying them. I nailed up 1x3 slats with about 1 1/2 space between them. The tops pass through the spaces and the tops hang down so moisture in the tops or in the onion can drain down. Seems to wotk

Looks good. We need to pull the rest of ours along with the beets. Along that line, how does a person unload a 53' van trailer full of onions without being fumed out? A few years ago I drove a truck past a field of onions in northern Colorado in the evening when the smells were hanging low. I had the windows down and the fumes coming off the field had my eyes stinging. In the middle of August when I was headed to or from Idaho I started seeing truckloads of onions headed across Nebraska on I80. Most were open top trailers with a mesh covering them but some were van trailers with the little door open in the back for ventilation and I could see the onions in there. I pity the people who had to unload them. Jim

I only have a bucket full that I dug today. I laid them on the mesh deck table. I see you talk about curing them. How do you know when they are cured? Will it hurt if it rains on them out there? (kind of wish it would as we could use a good rain!) How long will it maybe take?
