Brockway truck

I have an old Brockway dump that has trouble starting. after charging for awhile it will start and run nice. I changed the batteries and it didn't matter. when you shut it down you have to charge it to start it again immediately. I took the "alternator" off & had a shop look at it and they told me it was fine but was a generator not alternator. this is a negative ground system. the question is are all generator systems 6 volt systems and if so how do I make the charging/starting problem go away. the batteries are 12v wired in parallel configuration. any id tags have worn off or are unreadable so I'm not even sure of the year of the truck.

Does it crank OK cold? If it cranks hard when it's hot but does OK when it's cold the starter might be going bad. Just an idea. Jim

There were many 12 volt generator charging systems made.
It's an old truck, I would start by checking all the battery cables
and the connections on both ends.
They need to be clean bright and tight including ground connections.

P.S. Same goes for the wires in the charging system as well.

Most manufacturers went to 12v systems in the mid fifties but they still used generators. Most went to alternators in the early sixties.

The cut out relay , which is part of the regulator is probably sticking allowing the battery to discharge. Change the regulator.
