Reed canary grass.

How many guys on here have reed canary grass in there hay? I have a 6 acre field of this crap and I hate it. It gets so tall and tough that it makes good bedding, and thats about all, none of my horses or cows will eat it! I can't imagine why anyone would want this stuff as hay, any ideas to what's good about it? Lol. J

Cut it early and often. I have some in some wet areas. Cut it around 24" tall. Never noticed the cattle not eating it. I know its not their favorite to graze.

Have a lot of it in some wet areas here. I try to get it cut early but it doesn't always work. The horses, cows, and sheep all seem to eat it as their other option would be a snowball, and even canary grass is better than that.

Reed canary grass is very fast growing, and so hard to manage. usally found in low wet fields. If you can cross the ground and cut and bale before it can get to tall, this stuff will make good hay but... Most times where it is growing will be too wet to cross untill late July. And that is why it is there, if the field was any good, some other crop wpuld be on it.I f this field was tiled, and the canary grass sprayed with round up, it would soon be gone forever. I have seen Reed Canary grass over 6 feet tall, and when a new owner bought , and tiled the land it was done, and replaced with beans/corn/wheat rotation.

I had a lot of it in one field that I took over but after about three years of lime, fertilizer and two cuttings it was gone.

I have lots of it. If you can cut early and often it's good stuff. I don't know anyone that can get on their land and cut it that often and have weather to dry it. As someone else said, it feeds out lots better than snowballs.
