starter generator

I am restoring a 1939 Silver King with a Hercules engine that only has one place up front to put a stater or generator. I understand however that there used to be something called a starter-generator that might be used in the port. Someone else said that it's called a silent starter. Could someone tell me about such a thing and possibly tell me how to get one?

I know there used to be starter-generators (for units bigger than a lawn tractor or a "Cub"), back in the day, but I would have thought that was before the era of your tractor. MORE important than the fact is was a "Silver King" (who never actually MADE anything, just assembled parts), WHAT engine does it have, a Chrysler, perhaps?

My E-Z Go workhorse has a starter/generator, it turns in both directions. There"s a shop in Dallas that services them and does a good job too.

If I remember correctly 1926 Dodge
Bros car had 12 volts and starter generator mounted to the timing cover too.

A lot of older Hercules IX engines used a gear drive generator. Also like some of the Cletrac General tractors had lights which meant a generator but no hole for a starter.

If you have a belt pulley you could use another tractor using a flat belt to start the SilverKing.
My Wards tractor has the Delco starter/generator and it takes a car battery to crank the 14hp engine. You don't have the mechanical advantage of having a ring gear on the flywheel and the bendix drive gear that engages the ring gear during cranking. Hal
