I built a 9 strand, 6 ft high tensile fence, all wires hot with .5 joul charger, all wires tensioned tight. Damn bear goes right through fence every night. Wiped out 1/2 acre silver queen sweet corn. He can sence just when ears are ripe even before I can. I respect all wildlife and would not give this guy a death sentence for common theft, but it is a bit disconcerting, to say the least. Did I say that I love my silver queen, look forward to it all year.
 
Get one of those Australian fence chargers that puts out ten thousand volts. Can't remember the name right off. It will stop a bull.
 
He has learned that it only hurts for a little while. You best find a supply of sweet corn somewhere else. A little old .5 joul charger woulhn't keep a Taler out of a beer cooler!
 
I don't think it will shock him through the fur. He would have to touch it with his nose or push it on the bridge where the hair is thin before it will zap him.
 
I take some tin foil (little strips) coated with peanut butter and place it on the elec. fence wire every 20 to 30 feet. After a couple of licks the bear should leave your corn alone.
 
You need at least a 2 joule box with an excellent ground. You are trying to go through a lot of fur with a light ground contact.
 
only thing keeps critters out of my garden is a 110V running thru a 25 watt light bulb...i gave up on them sissy chargers a long time ago.
 
just mowed down 7-70 ft. rows of field peas. could not keep the deer out of them so i mowed them down. like your bear, the deer knew when the peas were about ready to pick.

Now that's funny, right there. . . Couldn't use it locally, of course, because the General Public doesn't know what a Taler is. Maybe you could substitute "redneck".
 
A half joule (.5) charger is a bottom of the line cheapy that will hardly tickle your finger. You want something like a 6 joule or larger and some real good grounding.
