hot wire/coons

I would think one that is low to the ground is enough. I am not aware of any high jumping coons, or pole vaulters either.

Neighbor uses three and seems to have pretty good luck. I haven't looked those year, but last year they were at about 6, 12, and 18 inches.

I have 2 for coons, one about 4 inches off the ground, another 6-8 inches high.

Another strand chest high for deer.

I use three wires from just above the grass to about 18". I've been having equally good luck with a German Shepherd that HATES coons!

We have two patches, one on each farm. One has three electric wires. Four, eight and about 14 inches off the ground. The other is protected by a Chocolate Lab. Jim

We put hot wire around our entire garden. Keeps the bunnies out as well as the coons. Two wire, one 2-3" off the ground and another about 5-7". Seems to work.

Not to change the topic, but I have a wood chuck eating my string beans. I set out two traps baited with apple slices. Caught two coon instead of the wood chuck.

Here's my setup. That Parmak 12 volt fencer doesn't let anything in. Haven't lost a veggie in several years now.

I use the same setup as Tom, though mine appears to be older. One wire 6 inches above ground, and another 6 inches above that. In dry weather I run a ground wire, but just lay it on the ground around the fence. You will need a ground rod driven 3 feet or more for it to be most effective. The only time I have ever lost anything the fence was around was this week when my battery failed and it would run down during the night.
