Guys I have ran into this more in the past year than in my life!!!! You call and the guy says I have some body comming next Tuesday, Then i am waiting for the dealer to decide if he wants it. Guy looked at it last week and is going to get back to me, and so on!!! I can see if they had a prospect comming that morning to take your number and so on. BUT WHAT ABOUT ME CASH IN HAND???? Not saying I havent ran into this in the past with someone who was hard to deal with. All these item are advertised for sale!!! So I usually just give up on it, but what is really up with this??

If I understand your post correctly, I think they are waiting to see how much money is on the table. In other words they are seeing if they will get more elsewhere or even more from you. I don't play that game buying or selling!
My 2 cents,
Andy

It is a balancing act. I try to give guys a chance to get here but I also think about the guy with cash in hand. I think the problem is more fellows have less time free to go look at stuff. I know many that have to work 5 and 1/2 days all the time. So how do they get to look at something during normal business hours.

I take the information guys leave me and contact them in the order they come in. Also if the item is a "HOT" seller I do not wait for very long with out a non refundable deposit if the guy is a slow decision maker.

Got one going on right now. Guy's father came an looked at a lawn mower for his son. He took pictures and all. The father came back a few days later an said the son wanted it but wondered if I would take a trade-in. We kind of made the deal with some guide lines on the possible trade. Son was supposed to come last Sat. with his old mower for the trade-in. He called the night before and said he had to work so he would not be able to come until this week. Told him and his father I would only hold it if he gave me a non refundable deposit. They did but I put a stop date on the receipt. I have had guys do that and wait week/months before they come back.

If you want a smooth fast transaction then stick to auctions. Any of the rest are getting more complicated.

I have that time issue too. I need to go look at some equipment a few hours away. It will be next week before I can get the time to go look. It may sell before I get there but that is life.

In my case Money talks and B.S. walks. In other words, money in hand talks the loudest. Sometimes I do make exceptions, last night I had a guy call about a 492 New Holland haybine I advertised for sale. After talking for about a half an hour swore he would be here today around 4:00 P.M. to pick it up. Guess what, he decided he didn't want it. But he didn't let me know till I called him to confirm he was comming. Now why lead someone on like that. He had to know last night he didn't want it, just say so and move on. Now it's back to money talks and Bull S--- walks. just my thoughts, Keith

Jocco, having been a used tractor and implement dealer Ive BEEN THERE DONE THAT N GOT THE T SHIRT.....

Anytime I had a chance to make a resaonable profit via a cash in hand CURRENT offer versus maybeeeeeeee more money maybeeeeeeeee later I learned from experience TO TAKE THE CASH ...The old bird in the hand parable

Now if a seller didnt accept an offer THATS HIS CHOICE AND RIGHT so just walk away. I kinda figure life and the world as we know it will probably go on if I make a purchase or not..

Also to avoid a wishy washy maybe buyer taking up all my time, if some dude was there a long time looking at a tractor I had for sale and my wife were to come outside saying some other dude on the phone wants to know if its still for sale and wants to come over and have a look see DUDE NUMBER ONE WILL EITHER TAKE IT OR LEAVE and I didnt care which lol

God Bless yall

If a guy is coming from a distance i'll hold it for him if he calls the night before and says he's coming.Local guys, forget it.First come first served.I had two tractors advertised and the same guy called me on both not realizing he called the same guy.He gave me the same I'll take it story and of course, never showed up.

Sometimes he's promised to hold it for somebody else, and I can respect that- I'd want him to honor his word if I was that other guy, too. What I've done in those cases is tell him to call me when he's ready to sell- I'll either be a cash buyer or will pass, but it will be one way or the other when I come look at it. That little speech seems to help them get over the wishy-washiness, especially after a couple of other no-shows.

I sell quite a bit of stuff on cl, always have somebody call and say, I'll be there such and such a time to look at it. I tell them to leave kinda early, cause I only wait 15 minutes after the time they say they'll be here. Have wasted too much of my time waiting for people to show up, and most don't. I will give a first chance buy to somebody local, but I think a lot of people get their jollys sitting there thinking about you waiting for them to showup.

It must be a local thing JT cause it has been bad past two years I don't sell much but have told people first one with cash gets it cuts to the chase mighty quick. I AM WONDERING IF THEY ARE TRYING TO WEED OUT TIRE KICKERS OR PLAY THE MORE MONEY GAME????? Here is one more one guy had to be away for a few days I said ok how bout the weekend I have got family reuion then leaving for Canada for a month (I hung up)

I have called people from CL and told them I was leaving the house and headed their way will the hold it for the drive time for me to get there? All have said it is on hold till I get there(Maybe two hours) and I will do the same for someone who calls me, but just calling and saying I want it and I ll be buy in a day or two won t cut it. Cash and carry.

"I have some body comming next Tuesday"

That"s gotta SUCK! I am NOT in favor of bodies showing up on pre-arranged dates!

Is it embalmed????

A used-equipment-dealer friend tells people "first one to put cash in my hand takes it", but if someone calls him and is driving a couple hours to look at it, he'll tell anyone who walks in before they get there to have a look and come back in the afternoon, or he'll call and let them know if it's still there or not.

He had a couple come in to look at a 7800 JD once. He had looked at everything, had a checklist he got somewhere of things to look at and what he needed to look for on them. They had never bought anything bigger than a glorified lawnmower or an old utility tractor and admitted they didn't really know what they were looking at then, either, but that they were a lot less money, too. He asked about a few things he wasn't sure on and ended up writing the check that day.
