John Deere 440B lost control

lost control of a John Deere 440B. The engine stalled, lost control of all braking and steering. The emergency brake failed. The machine rolled backwards off a mountain side, no one killed, it went through a house and got stuck in the house before it plunged off a 40 ft drop. I used to be able to pull up on the emergency brake handle to at least slow it down or stop it. Is this a bad design or what. Like the 55 Desoto loose the engine you lost the steering and brakes. That vehicle went away fast forever with the insurance claims.
 
I know I shouldn't be ROFLMAO,but come on,admit it. You would be too if it had happened to somebody else.
 
That is why they stopped calling them emergency brakes in cars and such and are now referred to as parking brakes. Altho in your case it did neither. Glad no one was hurt.
 
Seems like a really good design - make a machine that will be used in mountains and make sure the brakes and steering don't work if it dies. Sounds about like a drive shaft parking brake.
 
Nah... What was a bad design was the TimberJack's that used ONLY a driveshaft brake for ALL braking functions. Aside from the fact that they never worked worth a damn when they were new... you still had the option of twisting the drive shaft off and having nothing... and if you use the blade to stop you in a real emergency it's not unheard of to break the push arms off. So your Deere isn't near as bad as you might think...
Was there something wrong with the braking system when it didn't work without pump pressure? Most Deere systems I've seen would work manually without supplied pressure...

The Cessna add-on power steering outfits, but guys put on old tractors, were originally intended for cars, back in the '50s- but that ended quickly, for the same reason- if something goes awry, you got nuthin'.
