Just drained the coolant on a Ford F150 I bought last week. It has the 4.6 V8 and it came out looking HORRIBLE, before I started I was trying to check the strength of the antifreeze and it was so brown I couldn't see the floating balls.
I took the thermostat out (same yellow brown crud everywhere) and flushed the engine with 20/30 gallons of water and ran about that much through the radiator too.
The engine temp was fine before I started (fine now too) but what was all that crud? The truck had 100K on it and I'm guessing the original coolant.
