Should I sell the 8n? I dont use it ,I use the 2000 a lot. If we were going to move to pa I probably could use two tractors, but I dont use it at all now.Just thought I would ask you all for thoughts ,good or bad to help me decide!

I wouldn't sell it. At one time I said I'd never sell another tractor. I've sold a few since then, shouldn't have. I've got one here right now that I've got no use for and somebody could probably get some use out of,but I still don't think I'm in any hurry to get rid out it. It just takes up space but it's here and payed for.

When I saw your first picture I thought you were going to say you restored the tractor and now it cant fit out the barn door. Your question is much simpler to answare if you have room to keep it inside don't sell it.

Just knowing you have an extra tractor if needed is worth a lot. In fact, that in and of itself is worth more than you would get for the 8N. Yes, the 8N is kind of a "mighty mouse", but when the 2000 lays down on you, it will look "mighty good".

If you decide to sell it... wait six months to a year before you actually do. Can always sell them anytime - but once they are gone, they're gone.

Asked my husband to wait before selling a couple things:
JD 2 bottom plow - he kept.
Restored Dodge Grain truck - he sold...but by waiting a year, he was darn sure he wanted to.

I think it has significance with your daughter from what you have told us here. If were me, in your shoes, and there was no real urgent need, money for an emergency or similar, you have a place to store it, and you could alternate a little time to using it for some of the tasks the 2000 does, I'd want to keep it, run it periodically. There seems to be time when things like this don't seem so important as they once were and you could part with it without regret, years later, thinking back you may think different for one reason or another.

Larry I would keep it unless you need the money for something. The tires look like new and the rest of the tractor is nice. It will not bring enought to even think about replacing it if you have a change of heart down the road.

I have kicked myself for several of the tractors I have sold over the years. The only thing I can say is that years ago we needed the money for other things. Now I find that I keep too much stuff. LOL The boys tease me about getting enought tractors to hook to everything we own. Well we would not have to change tractors. Might be a plan. LMAO

Like Sweetfeet posted. Wait a while and let the idea bounce around for a while. If you still feel like you don't need it then you can always sell it down the road.

I know that moving to PA seems to be out for now but that may change down the road too. Your at the age where you will be slowing down more than you think work wise in the near future. So you may have more time in PA than you think.

Sell it. If you need it down the road buy another one. There are lots of those for sale everywhere. Just like the H.

Hey Larry.

I think that if you sold it you might regret it later.

A nice, functional tractor like that is an ace in the hole and with no payment is even better.

I will admit that I am partial to 8Ns.. I own one.

Brad

When I first started I had just one tractor--1855. It was big enough to do all the jobs I needed to get done and it is/was 30 years old. There wer occasions when i started to do something and the tractor had a problem. Nothing that i couldn't fix but the task got put off. At the time I wished for a backup tractor. Now there are 3 and a small one--JD 1520. I've thought about selling the 1855 as it sits most/all of the time BUT it runs and is the backup for all the rest.
Just a thought.

Keep it!!Your daughter learned to drive on it.I'm sure you had lots of 'bonding time' on it.One day she will be married with kids, she will want the 8N for her kids(your grandkids).8Ns are speacial.I sold mine 'cause I needed the money...Money's gone and so is the tractor:(.Same thing with my restored F-20:( I say keep it!

(quoted from post at 09:26:11 07/24/13) Ask yourself this, If I was to leave this earth, would it be sold by
my heirs?

Sell it... They are a dime a dozen here in Pa. I have seen running un painted ones selling for $600 to $900 .

You didn't really state if you could use the money from selling it for anything that would make your life better or if you will just blow the money on something else. I have a 1206, and M and 2 8Ns. Plus a TLB. I really hate the M and only use it for pulling hay wagons and the poo spreader. I'd love to get rid of it but it does get used. I'm not a collector, I'm a user. I'd say that if it sets a year and never gets used (even a parade or tractor drive is using them) then I'd think about getting rid of it. Only reason I'd keep a tractor that isn't being used would be sentimental reasons. Talk to the kids that learned to drive on it first.

Rick

I firmly believe everyone should have an 8N. Seriously, if you don't need the space where it's parked, and you don't have a pressing specific need for the money, keep it. It'll be fine there until you do have a need.

You don't have a need for the tractor either, you say? I don't have a need for two-thirds of the stuff I own (tools, guns, lumber, materials, etc.) but I want to keep it around.

Larry,
If its in your way or you just wanna see it being used, you can bring it down to the house and we'll look after it for you. That way, if you ever decided to come get it and use it again, you'd know just where it would be.

I buy, sell and trade tractors pretty regularly.
I usually don't get attached to many of them.
I still have my father's tractor that I learned to drive on though.
I will pass it down to his grandkids or great-grandkids who also learned on it.
I hope they will teach yet another generation or three and pass
the memories and stories of the good ole days with it.

Larry, You Asked! I would sell it so fast it would make my neighbors head swim! You are not using it now....Ship it out and be gone with a rig that your 2000 has beat hands down. Only reason to keep it is, If it is a family tractor Dads, Grand-Dads, ans Uncle, In-Law, Etc!
Personally I would not have one on My Place!
I will P!ss off a bunch of Folks,... Crappy little tractor, a PIA to drive and use. Just my thoughts. There Waaaay toooo many better tractors in various Flavors to own with PS, PB, TA, LPTO, Better tranny options too.
An 8N will bring a boat load of money from a Nimrod who lives in the City with a pocket full of cash. Who just bought a 5 acre Ranch! and has to have an 8N cause Grand-dad had one and he rode on it, in Grand-Dads lap 50 yrs ago!
Ship it and shed Not Narry-a-Tear over it being gone!

John A.

PS....IF, you stay in contact with the Buyer and in 5 yrs or so you can probably buy it back at 1/2 of what you sold it for.

^^^^^^^ i agree.. the 8n was the most worthless tractor invented imo.... i would rather light a fire under one then drive one.. soo many better tractors out there that can be has with lil money,,

Yah, they were such a dud Ford only sold half a
million plus of them and got sued by Ferguson for
patent infringement.

The TO20 is a copy of the Ford Tractor.Wonder how Harry Ferguson got away with that.An 8N differential section will bolt up to a TO20 transmission.

Guys, Larry Asked our Opinion! I said my response would p!ss off a bunch of folks too!
The 8N, DID and Was a major step forward in agriculture. The 8n put the team of horses, mules, oxen to pasture!!! It Doubled and Some the amt of Work, plowing done in a day by virtue of 2 bottoms compared to the 1 bottom the team pulled. and didn't need to be rested or feed!
In 2013 there are still waayy too many better choices of tractor to keep as a primary or secondary tractor !!! Not a 8N, IMO the 8N is still used by lots of folks for various duties fro raking hay, some baler work and Garden, or truck farming operation, Kept there for various reasons. I say it"s now best work is Parade Duty!
But when there are many, many other tractor with loaders, hydraulics, LPTO, PS, and better tranny options, Why KEEP IT unless it was Dads, G_Dads, or other realities, or close family friends!
MY Position!
Later,
John A.

Yup, they were the dodge neon of tractors. Sure dosent mean they were great. You either love them or hate them. Both sides cant understand the other. Almost replaceable now with a big box store lawn mower.
