Brother just called with a thought. He has a 4230 with a good engine and is wondering if it will bolt up to the 3020 bell housing since the block is broke any thoughts? Clutch?

Dont know 'bout a 3020.....Back in the early 80s a local fellow put a 4520 engine with "all the trimmings" into a powershift 4020.

The bell housings will fit. The trouble is the six cylinder verses the four cylinder. The frame rails need lengthen, the hood, and all the hydraulic lines. Also the throttle control is a bear because the 4230 pump is on the left and the 3020 pump is on the right.

Also a JD 4230 is not a good starting motor. If I was doing a switch that requires all the other work I would put a JD 329 out of a JD 2840. They run real smooth and are very fuel efficient. They are about the same horse power too.

I beg to differ. The inj pump on a 4260 is on the RH side of the block. Also the 2840 engine would not fit 3020 without an adapter plate.

Well TxJim I had a brain fart on the injection pump side but the position of the pump is still different and it makes the throttle a bear to do.

As for the JD 2840 in a JD 3020. You do not need an adapter plate. You do have to drill out some of the holes to a larger size but you don't need a plate. I know where there are two of these conversions at. Two brothers did one each. The one brother had a JD 2840 that eat the Hi-lo clutch pack and destroyed the housing. He had a JD 3020 with a bad motor. He married the two together. Made a neat chore tractor. His brother liked it so well that he took a gas JD 3020 a salvaged JD 2840 motor and made himself one the next year. I am not sure what they did on the clutch/flywheel but they solved it.

Either way The 4230 motor is not a direct bolt together deal to switch the motor into a JD 3020.

Brother should have shut the noisy tractor off as soon as he heard it making engine noise. Lesson in life but we all have done them before and will more than likely do some thing like it again.

not to be argumentative but the swap is easy enough the 4230 motor will bolt directly to the 3020 have put two 7700 combine motors in 3020's. Get the frame rails for the bigger motor I used 4020 depending on where you find them at most 200.00 well spent dollars, lengthened the hood 6 inches and the hydraulic lines the same. As for the 2840 motor if you want to go that route hunt the plate from a 4030 and it will be relatively easy swap as for the drilling and cutting why go to the trouble when oem parts are available.

Motor swaps are possible but usually have to be used up by owner as resale is not too good.Usually less headaches to stay with was factory specs. The exception was the Kinze repower which still sell well.

All I'm going to state is the gasket for mating the clutch housing to engines on a 4030(Dubuque engine) & 4230(Waterloo engine) are different part numbers and according to parts catalog photos are shaped different. Also 4030 clutch housing(QR/SRT) is a different part number than a 4230(QR/SRT). I was taught that the 300 series Dubuque engines had a different flywheel pattern than Waterloo engines.
