nh276 baler

hey guys!

I have a problem with my 276 square baler. Everything works fine, except that the bale is not perfectly square. On the left side, the twine is 3 to 4 inches longer, which make the bale very loose and easily destroyed when it lands in the trailer. Hydraulic pressure is at full, knots are good, needles and forks are perfeclty timed, I'm running out of ideas! Have you seen this problem before?

If the bale is longer on the left side... then it's got more hay in that side. That's kind of a good problem as NH balers go. Adjust the packer fingers to not drive the hay so far across. I'm not really familiar with how to do that on your baler but I'm sure the manual will explain it fairly simply. I'm more accustomed to Deere and Ford balers and on those you adjust it such that the feed fork has less penetration into the bale chamber... or recedes quicker. The same principle applies here.... just that it's a different mechanism to adjust.

I would bet you do not need to do anything but either put more hay in the windrow or just speed up your travel speed. You are starving the back front side of the chamber. Try speeding up your travel speed and see what happens.

i agree speed up or makebigger windrows my 310 willdo about the same thing the bigger the windrow and more hay i can cram down its throat the better the bale comes out

Probly have some broken springs or dogs rusted fast and not keeping the hay packed. At the end of the chamber there is a restrictor bar on both sides. One could be gone.

If the bale was short on the left side... then I would say you're correct... If it's long on the left side, it's already well fed. The point about the hay dogs is quite valid.

I agree with several suggestions, also you might try crouding the baler over on the winnd row alittle more to the left, check that the tension cranks are even and the restricter ribs are ok and not missing. Must be something major or it would be much closer to even. Re- cut, rake, and bale in the same direction...just my .02

If you are talking LEFT as when you are driving, you are not getting enough hay pushed to that side. Need to adjust the feed fingers to push more hay to that side. Never been around a NH so I can't tell you how to do it.

This old girl and I have spent many a summer together.

I bale more light windrows than heavy. The size of the windrows don't change the tension for me from one side to the other. The hay fingers wipe all the way across the chamber. The hay being pushed back in the chamber is what pulls the string around the bale. The only thing that can cause the string to be longer on one side is the hay is going out the back of the bale chamber easier on one side than the other. When I had that problem with my baler I had lost one of the vertical restrictor bars and the end of the chamber along with the hay dogs having broken springs and the ones that were froze in the up position. I emptied the chamber and made new restrictor bars for both sides copying the one that was still mostly intact. I use angle iron and sawed one side down and welded in bolts on the correct angle. To make tighter bales in fine grass you have bolt holes to add another set or restrictor bars if desired. The bale tensioner restricts the hay in the center of the bale top to bottom but does not hold the sides even.

Rod has the correct fix and yes, hay dogs can cause it also. my MF224 makes them about an inch longer on the left than right. It used to be the opposite until I adjusted the feeder forks, now I don't worry about it. But I can be baling on ground with a lot of moisture and huge windrows or dry ground with light wind rows and it never makes a difference in anything but the weight.

The 276 was one of NH's best all time balers. To move the hay more to the left[,packed side of bale,] move the tines on the feeder bar further apart, more hay to the right[,cut side of the bale], feeder tines closer together. Good luck....Ron

It's the right side when i'm in the tractor. I'll bale some hay in a couple of days, i'll check it out. thaks for the ideas.

Restrictor? Could you send me a picture of that? just in case...
