Question on PA. Pics

I posted this on that message and what a fine bunch of pics it contained including the stock and all in the pics, but I had the question about efficiency of the operation.

Since 8' stalks make 2 ears per stalk as stated, and some of our TX. "apparent" genetically engineered 5' stalks do too and all that stubble has to be grown and disposed of, what's in a tall stalk?

Thanks,
Mark

Here, I just got back from looking at crops. Corn is easily over 12ft. average. This would be an over average crop. This link should help http://www.ipm.iastate.edu/ipm/icm Just a estimate here but I would say $50 an acre for fertilizer value plus organic matter on top of that. Then erosion control on top of that.

Ears don't really matter, it's bushels of shelled grain per acre or (in the East especially) tons of silage per acre.

Short answer--SILAGE.
I'm a grain farmer and don't want tall corn it's a waste of fertilizer. I also don't want 2 ears per stalk. Vareity(sp) drives height population drives number of ears, particularly with flex corn. So if I'm getting really tall corn multiple years I look for a different variety. I want the ears just high enough to be above the critters. This year, after an initial dry spell, we have had consistent rains and i will be looking for those double ears; probalby won't do anything as a result but it is a consideration. If next year also as double ears I will up the population a bit. I don't mind a double now and then just one good sized ear per stalk for maximium grain.

Now that you mention it we cut corn sileage down here. Don't have any silos to speak of so we just put it on the ground and cover it with a white plastic tarp. Some guys roll that and green grass and white plastic wrap the bales. Seems to work.

On the tons of corn in the crib per acre, that's why I was wondering on the ear size on a tall vs short stalk.

Last year after the farmer harvested the corn, the local horse guy baled up the stalks for bedding.
