my husband has an old case 400 series tractor we need to replace tires. It currently has 15.5 x 38 tire on it. do we have to stay with same size or ? what other numbers would fit. i believe the rim is 14 inch. thanks we are newbies.

14.9x38 or 16.9x38 will work with no issues.13.6x38 will also work, but would be a little small.12.4 or 18.4 could be mounted, but is not advisable.best to stay with 15.5x38

You can safely go an inch wider or narrower than the rim width, using old size markings. You have new size markings now, and what Delta Red said about 14.9 and 16.9 would be the allowable new size markings. 14.9 is 13 inches at the rim, 16.9 is 15 inches at the rim.

16.9s wok on 14" rims, but will raise your gearing considerably. If your 400 is a working tractor you will notice a loss of horsepower.

Most likely for what he will do with it the 14.9s will do just fine and save a little compared to 15.5s.

Awhile back I inquired about some tire prices.14.9
was more expencive than the 15.5.I was told the 14.9
was a slow seller, therefore more pricey.
