My Guardian Angel Was On Duty Today

I was riding my tractor slowly under some trees this afternoon and heard a loud crack. I hit the throttle as about thirty feet of the top of a dead oak tree fell behind me. If I had been two seconds later coming through there I would probably be feeding blow flies by now. Let's be careful, it's a jungle out there. TDF

Pulled out of a private drive onto the blacktop with a 185 allis and disk mower. Short hill to the right, and closer one on the left, came out about 1/3 throttle, just as all four tires were on the bt, a gmc 2 ton topped the left hill. Hit full bore and cut the center line just as he barley missed the left rear wheel. The driver is a doper, no drivers licence, probably no licence or ins on the truck. Neighbor was in front of me, he saw it, scared the living you know out of him. Scared him so bad, that when we came back out of there with the rake and baler, he had his brother sitting on top of that hill watching for oncoming traffic.

Sometimes the dead tree's seem to fall for no reason. I've heard several fall on my property and thankfully several hundred feet away. I did have one fall on the canopy of the Cat though. I lifted the bucket up to push it over but then it broke further up and fell backwards even though it was leaning forward about 15 deg's. I always try to work safe but sometimes weird stuff happens. If a tree looks bad or I'm not sure, I reach out with the backhoe to push it over as high up as I can.

I know what you mean. I didn't expect this one to come down on my truck, stock trailer and squeeze chute either.

I was in a canoe floating down a clear Ozark stream one fall and had a big tree fall in the river about 50 yards in front of us. We only had a small gap left to get past the fallen tree. It would have squashed us for sure had we been about 20 seconds faster.

There was a lady killed while walking her dogs recently in the twin city area of MN, the tree was rotten and gave little warning of falling on her.

You yanked the throttle when you heard the crack. Me, I would have probably stopped and looked up, Wily Coyote-like.

A few years ago near Dayton, Ohio, a couple firefighters were out checking hydrants in an ambulance one spring when a tree fell on the cab and killed them both.

I didn't look up because I was afraid of what I'd see. All I could think was "get outta here"! TDF

A woman walking in a park in the twin cities was killed by the falling of a large healthy tree, in a 25mph wind. Your acceleration was a good idea. Jim
