All photos were taken within a mile or two of my home. Parked my Ford in front to give idea of how tall the corn is this year. The photos of the crops are on our land. We do not farm ourselves, just lease about 80 acres to local guy. Weather has been next to perfect so far (knock on wood).

I just so happened upon another YTer this morning while driving and taking these pictures.

Both the corn and soybeans look fantastic. We had generous June and July rains in Randolph County Indiana. On the 4th. the corn was 8 feet tall with tassels. That has never happened before that I recall. Beans are near waist high but the low spost have a lot of yellow. Tad too much rain for the beans. Local sweetcorn stand is open today!

real nice, lush and green. I like those roadside stands, it's a rarity to see them out here in MO. My sweet corn barely reaches my chest and is starting to tassle - not good.

Nice pics but down here you brag about how short the stalks are with the 2 ears, each positioned at exactly the same height and place on the stalk. I mean it took resources to grow that 8' and more resources to dispose of it.

Every time I pass a corn field I think the same thing. What a waste; not the corn, the things other than the ear of corn. Course most plants of the sort are pretty inefficient anyway. I do realize that plant residue is good in rebuilding the soil, especially down here where we have little top soil and lots of Houston Black Clay. Course clay isn't all bad. It supports crops in dry summers that would die otherwise.

Genetic engineering is a great idea if you ask me. If you could reduce that plant to say 2' and get your 2 ears, sounds like a deal to me.

Course I don't know the volume of corn in the 2 ears from an 8' plant vs a 4-5' plant down here, nor the quality/kernel count/size. I don't know what the soil type say in Iowa vs Texas has to do with the actual usable crop.

My thoughts,
Mark

Most years, our corn is only 5 to 6 feet high. Heck, my yard is usually brown by now, but this has been a good year with rain coming at the right times. That's why the corn is so high this year.
As far as yield is concerned, i have no idea and i'll bet dollars to donuts that the farmer wont give a acurate bpa. Probably don't want the landowners to do the math. I should have taken some pictures of the alfalfa fields. It wont be long before 3rd cutting. According to the weather guessers, its supposed to get close to 100 degrees most of next week, with t-storms predicted almost everyday.

PS
The resources from those hay burners in the pics go on our fields all winter long and some guys bale their stalks.

Daryl I found that T intersection and the stand on Google maps. Where is the farm located from Startlesville with that fancy fence?

North about a half mile. Sits in between Mountain and Forge Dam Rds. That fence was just put up this summer, so it probably will not show on your map
