Hay Cutting

I shot some video working with the old 479 New Holland haybine yesterday. Its old and well used but is the best cutting machine I have ever used. Didn't realize how much it rattled until I watched the video.

Still an awesome old machine, I cut almost 100 acres with mine last year, just watch for slop in the gearbox. It's supposed to be nice here the rest of the week, going to run it and the 488 for all they're worth tomorrow

Nice video - I really enjoyed the unique camera footages mounted on various locations on the haybine.

I had to laugh at myself @ about the 1 minute into mark of your video as I realized that I was ducking and swerving my body to miss all those taller weeds that were hitting the camera. (I think was subconsciously ducking to miss tree limbs and weeds. I am a middle aged avid ATV trail rider and ducking limbs is common practice on overgrown tight trails when riding fast-LOL).

Otherwise, Cutting with a 9' haybine (or mower conditioner) is actually pretty enjoyable. If only I had a nice cabbed tractor like that Case you were using. I do not think my Farmall h, or my John Deere A while using a manual ratchet cylinder in place of a hydraulic cylinder would hold a candle to that extremely nice Case tractor as far as comparisons go; but my ole junk does work nonetheless so I can somewhat relate to your cutting enjoyment - LOL.

Glad you enjoyed the video. I know all about dodging tree branches too. I'll admit the 2090 is overkill on a 9 foot haybine but I have several reasons. The pto on my Super 90 is too weak to run the haybine. The 730 Case takes superhuman effort to steer it. Most important of all , I seem to becoming more affected by grass pollen as time passes and that sure takes the fun out of cutting hay on an open tractor if I am sneezing and eyes running constantly itching.
And thanks jdseller for making that neat link to the video. I have tried everything I could see here but unable to find how to do that.

i have a 479 thats a back up cutter.. i call it the tank cause everything else will break down but that cutter never has a issue... but dang it rattles and is very noisy compared to my other cutters,

Forgot to mention: My well used (and abused) Hesston 1120 mower conditioner is easily as loud (although it probably should not be).

I am slowly fixing and refurbing as I go, but this thing sure was abused by previous owners and it has been over lots of acres. That said: it still works good just has a few extra rattles here and there.
