TYPE OF ALTRNATOR BRACKETS??

Hello, I am going to convert my 72 Ford 3000 diesel from a generator to an alternator. Have already found the type of alternator to use...it is a GM 2 wire (hot wire and light wire with no tach drive) and the electrical hook up is very straight forward. But my current brackets witll not work and I do not have the tools or skills to fabricate any. I do have some examples below and am wondering if anyone has used any of them. The top adjusting bracket does not seem to be included with any bracket kit so am looking for ideas for that as well.

I really don't want to use the 300.00 plus alternator kit, just really don't need the tach drive and that is rather expensive.

I really would appreciate any advice or previous experience with how you did the coversion. Pictures would be very helpfull as well (by email if you like).

Thaks for any help you can offer, Tom

2 wire no such thing it is 3 or 1 as far as a Delco 10si. You have the excite wire that has the light or diode in it then the #2 wire goes to the big stud and then the charge wire so that makes 3 all be it the one wire is all of 2 inches long but it is still there and needed

I guess my terminology is not right..there is a pig tail with wires..red is hot and the white is to connect to the light wire (W/L) connected to the regulator after it is unhooked, the light should go off if the alternator is charging. See the alternator below and I do appreciate the info.

Thanks, Tom

The red wire you have pictured is why it is called a 3 wire. The #1 I.E. the white wire is the excite wire the red one the sencing wire which turns the VR on and off then you have a #10 gauge wire off the big stud going to the amp gauge so in turn you do have 3 wires all be it the red one is short

Thanks again, I was told to continue the red wire to the + battery and the white to the light wire at the regulator and I should be good to go.

Look for unused tapped holes in the cylinder head. All you really need is number 2 which you can fabricate if you drill a series of holes and die grinder out the slot . I use all aluminum . Most heads have holes to spacer from and hold brackets. One end gets anchored but pivots and the other outside of alternator goes to the slot to tighten belt. Figure your spacers by using a plumb bob held dead center of the existing pulleys.I would not pay money for any of those but thats why I have a Bridgeport.

On most tractors I have switch to an alternator I use the generator bracket and a piece of all tread. Some times you have to flip the bracket up side down but on most doing that works just fine. Yes I have also seen brackets welded up like the ones you pictured but I figure why do that when you can do it the other way and be able to switch back if you want to latter

Red wire right where you have it since it will see battery voltage because of the charge wire. The white wire goes to the ignition switch the side that is not hot when the switch is off

Allthread is threaded rod. It is available in all standard bolt sizes and threads. Lengths can vary from 2'-12' depending on where you buy it. Any hardware or farm store should have it. You can cut it to length and essentially make bolts of any size. By using nuts against the block and bracket you can make a very easy spacer that can be readily adjusted.

(quoted from post at 17:16:02 07/09/13) All tread is a 3 foot piece of rod be it 3/8 or 1/2 inch etc that is threaded from end to end so the term all tread is used

Not to be picky but I think you mean thread, not tread. You have tread on your boots or your tires, you have thread on your bolts or threaded rod.

The base number is (TISCO) 6X10303 if you can find one...
I take pride in my work and would never use all thread so its your call... There's about 15 to 20 base U's for the lower mount in this tube...

I have never made the alt brackets for a 1000 series Ford but someday will when the Gen on mine bites the dust... Then I will pick up a U I cut from a 2" trailer receiver and roll my own from their and be proud of it as I have on others I converted...

To answer your question other than the part # I gave ya I know of NO bracket only store brought set up for you tractor...

BTW I checked TISCO (6X10303) and its no longer available

All Thread
