2003 Silverado - Gauge Cluster Not Working

I have a 2003 Silverado 1500, the gauge cluster intermittently works. Sometimes upon start up it works, sometimes it doesn't. I can't associate the problem with any driving scenario or weather conditions. It is totally random.

I did a little bit of internet research and have found this to be a fairly common problem. There are aftermarket services available that will rebuild your cluster and re-program the correct mileage.

Does anyone have any recommendations on who to use or any other possible solutions?. Thanks

Yup, you have found the stepper motor problem. I think someone on this forum replaced the motors themselves, hopefully he will post, if your comfortable with the repair you can do it yourself.

I had mine redone by a guy in Saxonburgh. He is a light trk mechanic for Baierl Chevy. He charged me $100 and it took him
1 hr to replace 4 stepper motors. Mine was a 2004 GMC 1500.

(quoted from post at 10:13:11 07/08/13) Could you give me the contact info of the Saxonburg gentlemen. Thanks

Don't have a phone number. I can drive there though. Off of 356 go south towards Saxonburgh at the Stop Light by Concordia. Come to Tee and go rt to 2nd driveway on rt. His house is in the back of that driveway.

Yeah, they're crappy (me -2003 Silverado 2500HD). I think the "secret warranty" was for 7 years only. I replaced mine with a Dorman remanufactured from Rock Auto for around $170. The core charge is high but they were very prompt in returning it when I sent the old one back. They also transfer the mileage for you. www.rockauto.com

I just had my mechanic change mine out. Seems like it was 150 bucks plus an hour labor. Rebuild shop wanted that and Id have to take it and pick it up.
