White"s bridge was a one of very few covered bridges around. Still in good condition, used every day... Built just after the civil war. Now it"s burned. Authorities used the word arson to describe it. Hope the find and convict the culprits, what a crying shame.

My favorite part was the guy that saw it burning at 3:00 but didn't call. Leave it to someone else, idiot.

I sure am glad I don't have that dork as a neighbor. Around here we watch out for each other and the goings on.

That makes me mad. I'll bet there are just a handful of bridges like that in the country. You sure don't find them out here in Kansas.

Thats too bad. I have went within a few miles of that bridge many times and never knew it was there. I like to take M-21 when heading to GR. Would have detoured to check it out.

Give it time, I bet they will catch them. A few beers and they will be bragging to their friends.

That's what they were saying in the restaurant this morning. Steve asked Butch where he was early this morning.

I had a stop down there on the milk route back in the early 70s just up the road from it.

What a great loss.

Hopefully they will find the scum bucket(s) that did this.

There is a covered bridge a few miles from my house in SE IN that was removed from service and replaced with a modern bridge about 40 years ago. The covered bridge was moved a couple hundred feet to a park and placed on display.

Of course, kids set it on fire within a few years. Though damaged, it was salvaged and repaired.

People that do such things should be shot.

What these morons do not realize is that what they have done is permanent.
There is no replacement for a piece of history like that.
I'm from Ionia County and besides visiting White's bridge, we travel
to Indiana almost every year to attend "Bridge-Fest" that celebrates
the old covered bridges.
That festival has turned into a huge flea market, but its still nice.
I see the comments on the news story about "punishment" and I wonder
what the people who wrote the comment think that should be?
5 years? 6 months? Slap on the wrist?
Capital punishment is not an option in Michigan.
The problem with kids these days is parents these days.
Or the lack thereof.

Let's just put it this way. If they were stupid enough to brag about it,and they just happened to come up missing, might not be too many folks wanting to get to nosey about what really happened to them.

Are you near Guilford? The covered bridge has been in the park since 1960. I had to look it up, 40 years didn't seem right to me.

Always a shame to lose a community treasure like that. Hopefully they will catch those responsible, but they can't be punished enough for what they did.

Some dumb***es burned the one over Elk Creek, west of erie, PA, down several years ago. It's quite a trip to get around where it was. I knew there was one in the area from when I was a kid but didn't know where, til I stumbled on it back in 05.

The young 'man' that burned the McBride covered bridge was caught and made to do community service. He worked at the elevator in Winterset and I thought he ought to be made to pay for an exact replacement, even if it took the rest of his life, but no, just do some community service. If people had to put some 'skin' in the game, maybe they wouldn't do such destructive things.

a big one burnt accidentally several years ago at Phillipi WV. Filling a service stations gas tanks & override failed & gas ran over & down the bridge. Wasn't long til a spark ignited it & it burnt so bad it had to be dismantled. The first land battle of the Civil War was fought there & workers found many minnie balls in the uprights. It was rebuilt exactly as it had been.

What a sad event!! A piece of history that can never be replaced.
We lost a local bridge to "Irene" 2 years ago.

We had one set afire several years back. (Gudgeonville Bridge) They caught the people responsible. The punishment was not enough for what they did. Should have to make them pay restitudion or sit in jail until the dept is paid. Young men with nothing to do. Says a lot about our society today.

Idiots set on fire the covered bridge that was moved to the Ohio U. Lancaster campus recently. Luckily it was not a total loss and was repaired. Some additional needed repairs due to rot had to be done once they got into it. It reopened a couple of weeks ago. Can't understand the attitude of these fools that think it's funny to destroy or deface other people's property.

We're still building them around here. This one was finished 2-3 years ago
