Help! Governor Issues

Cutting hay yesterday and the governor on this old swather decided to go south. :>)

Little Ford Industral 6 pop engine so it's belt driven.

Can I just find another governor off another engine (no matter the make or model) or does it have to be for this particular engine?

Never had a governor fail before. :>(

Tractor Supply used to handle Pierce Governors. Think they are still in business. Google Pierce Governor, there are several possibilities. Good luck with it.

If you are handy, you can use any belt driven gov. They all work on the same principle. But some are constant (wide open), and others variable. On a Swather probably have a constant (like a combine). Both should work. Vic

Thanks Vic,

Looks just like the governor on my old Gleaner combine from years ago.

I'm gonna start hittin' the bone yards first.

I've got a real good diesel to drop in this machine but not in the middle of haying season. :>)

Vic has it correct. There is an older model of MF combine that uses the belt driven governor too. Maybe the gas model 300??? You know of the Gleaner. I also think some of the White combines used them too. Just about any machine with the Chrysler gas motor used the belt driven Pierce governor.

Any old NH combines around with the Ford 6 gas industrial?
Used to be lots of Uni's around here with the GM V-6 gas. Don't know where they all went.
You might want to be prepared to switch pulleys from your gov. to whatever you find.
Probably the most important thing is the link to the carb./throttle lever. Usually as long as they're both wide open at the same time, you're OK.

Allan if you find an old Perice (and that is what most were) you can reverse the operating lever. They can be mounted several ways to pull or push.
Sharp as you ar won,t take you long. Most old GALLION graders used the belt drive perice. Also SOME air cooled engine used them.

i would say the old versatile 400 swathers with the ford 200 cid engines should be very easy to find , as so many just sitting around now not being used.

may help with info?

I used Pierce belt drive governors a few times and learned the hard way to run the belt on them pretty loose. The shaft inside was not strong enough to have much force on it. I also needed to switch to a lighter spring than the one which came with it when it was new.

Allen,

Have you been inside it?

There is not much too them, maybe a bearing went, or one of the pins that keeps the little weight on the shaft backed out? Wouldn"t hurt to take a peek.

I can look, but it's pretty well toasted.

Shaft moves in and out about a half and inch, growls like crazy and it's slinging all the oil out from every conceivable opening. :>)
