International 856

My international 856 died while in the field, and I
thought it might have ran out of fuel, so I bled the
fuel lines, but it still doesn"t seem to want to
start at all, although the starter works and engine
is turning over. Any Ideas?

Do you have fuel running right out of a bleed point? The beauty of diesels is you don't need usually to look very far for the problem.

I wonder if algae got as far as the injectors? People will ridicule me for saying this... but if you were to give it a shot of ether- would it fire? If not, cam/timing gear/ valve issues- that's all that's left. good luck.

Well if you are getting fuel to the pump then it could be that the pump seezed up and twisted the shaft before it took out the timing gears . To check this shut off the fuel at the tank and then remove the two screws that hold the timing window on the pump . Thenlook in the window and try and turn the fan by hand and get the engine to turn and see if the pump is turning or not . If it is not then it sheared the shaft . If you do not have fuel at the filters then you have a plug at the tank and i will not go into what all i have found stuck in the outlet over the years.

We has ether assist on our 856. It won't kill it. Give it a whiff and see if it starts. Like they said, kind out where there is fuel. That will tell you a lot.

you bled the fuel lines. so are you saying air came out of the filters? did you bleed both filters in order? how about the high pressure fuel lines?

when you crank it over, do you get smoke out the exhaust?

when you crank, does it sound like it's trying but not quite there, or just cranking?
