July 4th: Holiday or work day?

On our farm July 4th was more often just another day to cut or bale hay. Very few 4th's were holidays for us. No holiday for Memorial day or Labor day either if there was work to be done on the farm. That's just the way things were then.

Still that way for me, mowed hay this morning that will bale tomorrow, mow some more tomorrow to bale Friday. I know there are a lot of get togathers and pic niks planned for tomorrow, but at my place it mostly just another day.

We always took the day off on the 4th of July, and on Memorial Day. Didn't work on Sundays, either, unless it was absolutely necessary, usually during harvest. Dad and his brother always thought of Labor Day as a day for unions to celebrate, so they didn't observe it.

Funny you should bring that up- I was just thinking yesterday about the most miserable 4th I can recall.

We always u-picked strawberries when I was a kid- mom made jam, froze some for shortcake, etc. It wasn't bad if you did it early in the season- big berries, went pretty fast. But for whatever reason, when I was about 10, we didn't get around to it during the prime of the season- so after milking on the 4th, mom announced that we were going to pick berries, as this was the last day the field would be open.

It was miserable- hot, berries were tiny and took forever to pick. And we were missing shooting off all those glorious firecrackers that were waiting at home! Soon it was just us in the field, and even the "straw boss" left, telling us to just leave whatever we thought was fair in the coffee can.

Mom made it into a "life-lesson" of sorts- sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do, even if it is unpleasant. But that sure didn't make it any more fun at the time.

Big rain event forecasted for alabama tomorrow! Will find something to do though, hopefully it will not involve work.

If it wasn't a holiday,I'd cut hay for sure. I cut yesterday and I'm cutting today. I'm going to the flea market in the morning. If some is dry enough to rake and bale tomorrow afternoon,I'm not saying I won't,but not making any real big plans to over do it.

Maybe ten years ago I happened to be talking to the patriarch of a huge family farm which was just standard sized when I hung out there as a kid. He told me how being the fourth he and his wife had to bring in around 80 rolls of hay by themselves because all the rest of the family was taking it off. He was saying never again!

I worked the 1st and got paid straight time. I will work tomorrow and be paid "Holiday Pay". Not anywhere near as generous as you're getting but nonetheless "Better Than A Sharp Stick In The Eye". They say that Canada is 146 years old. Could have fooled me. It doesn't look to be a day over 145.

Dialysis starting at 6:00 A.M. MDT and maybe a trip over to Helena MT as friends are going to fire up one of their steam engines.

Titan Machinery in Winger, MN will be open! Just me at the parts counter, the store manager, and one tech. Everyone else is off. I volunteered, though.

Looks like we will be canning tomatoes tomorrow in the am. Hope to fire up the grill latter. Rest of the family is either to far away or have their own plans that don’t include the farm.
At what ever you do be safe

Well, I just might go swimming or fishing-----In my front yard----If it don't stop raining!
Just remembered, I gotta pick up a fifth on the third so I can enjoy the fourth! And no,I ain't gonna be driving anywhere, just another quiet day at home.

Work at home day, plenty of projects. Plan on spending some quality time with tractors and looking for some time to play drums

I am planning on going to a tractor pull, and catching up on some
work around the house since I have to work Friday.
Seems there may be a softball game in the works too though.
Don't be makin' fun of the shortstop. He has to run twice as fast!
Happy Fourth everyone! :)

I've a big bush hogging job planed but the latest forecast is 80% chance of rain.

Rain is something that we do not need this year.

I hope to take the day off. The nearest town (Eldon) is celebrating on Saturday. I've already signed up my Farmall H and 9N to run in the parade. I think after the parade, I might hang around in town and try to sell eggs.

Unless it rains tonight I will be in the wheat field tomorrow. May cut out a little early to have dinner with some neighbors.

(quoted from post at 17:27:54 07/03/13) That's too cool Royse!!!
Thanks Kornfused. Not really an original idea, but cute just the same. :)

P.S. the nieces and nephews had fun laying out the "field" LOL

Just another 24 hours at the firehouse...waiting to see what kind of oddities the public can come up with to hurt/maim themselves. Hoping the rain will slow down the firework injuries and the alcohol related stupidity...always hopeful. Oh, it's straight time.
