h smokes sometime

menthol or regular? filter or non, nine out of ten men who tried camels prefer women...what color smoke and under what condition???

I would say valve guides.

Have you taken a compression test on the engine?
First take a dry compression test.
Second time squirt some oil in the cylinder then check compression. If the compression comes up then the rings are worn. If the compression stays the same its leaky valves.

Ton, My IH C it sometimes smokes when it starts and only for perhaps 30 seconds or less. It never uses oil. Some starts no smoke.

If you start a lawn mower and use too much choke it too will smoke.

I think the smoke I get is caused by too much gas on starting.

My plugs are as clean as new.

If your are burning oil all the time, there will be oil deposits on your plugs. In which case it could be rings, valve guides or something mechanical. What do your plugs look like?

If you have the same carb I have, there is only one adjusting screw on the carb. My adjusting is backwards. Crank it in and the fuel mix goes extremely rich, black plugs. I have mine cranked out to a point where I had to put 2 small washers under the spring to keep the adjusting crew from falling out.

most likely worn valve guides - probably nothing to worry about.

Usually valve guide smoke is right when starting -but especially after changing the oil.

As others have said - a compression check will tell you what sort of shape your rings are in (provided you've adjusted your valves recently).

You can try heavier oil to reduce smoke.
