My 8n ford 1948. Wont pull a 5ft finishing mower in first gear I have a oVer ride clutch on it down hill it's fine but a small grade and the tractor Boggs down and help appreciated

The mower is rated for 5 - 30 hp the lift is fine

A Ford 8N has a pretty fast low gear for a finish mower in taller grass. They where only about 24-25 PTO HP the day they where new. You take one that is worn out and I have seen them under 15 PTO HP when checked.

Tune the tractor up and see if it does any better but I think your engine is needing overhauled.

I have a 6 ft King Cutter finishing mower behind my 8N. I mow in third gear with it with no problem unless I let the grass get too tall. With a finish mower you should only be taking off a couple inches.

Check the firing order on your spark plug wires.
Those little Ns will run on 2 cylinders but not make any power.
I pulled a 6' finish mower for a couple of years with an N and it had plenty of power if the grass wasn't too high.
You don't need an ORC on a finish mower. Just on a brush mower.

I had a 5' mower on my Cub and it did fine in 2nd gear when set up correctly. That is an 8-10 HP tractor.

There has to be a problem with your engine.

Something is wrong there.
With the 48(front mount)8N at the farm I use a woods 5 foot finish mower. Cuts good in second gear and will run it in third.

(quoted from post at 14:43:28 06/28/13) Do's it have a Sherman step up.If it does might be in the high side.Just a thought.

I have a 2N with a Sherman transmission. It's in good running order and I have no problem with a 6' Farm King finishing mower. With taller grass I mow in 1st gear to do a better job, but it will go just fine in 2nd. This is only with the Sherman in low range. High range spins the mower quite a bit faster and thus takes a lot of horsepower.

Will disagree with the others that you have enough tractor. Just Ok as a semi-finish mower but not in heavier or taller grass nor brush. Father-in-law mowed (knocked down the taller stuff/weeds) his horse/goat/donkey pasture with a five ft and a completely-rebuilt, fine-running 8N and it wasn't overpowered. Tried our Ford 5ft on the Ford 640 which is slightly bigger than your 8N and it just didn't work for tougher mowing. The 40 hp Ford 961 was a good match

Solved number. 3 and four spark plug wire crossed first 8n I have ever owned and tonight when I engaged the mower this tractor pulled like a champ only paid 200.00 for the tractor and he's got a 541 offset diesel high-crop for 1000.00 running iam going to buy please no email as we say in ga it ain't FORSALE NOW
