Truck of choice

I know this topic has been discussed before but I can't find previous threads on the topic.

I'm looking to trade my 05 3/4 ton Duramax. The prices of these trucks have the ole back side cringing. I'm looking for input on the newer ford trucks with the 6.7 liter diesel. Do they seem to be a good reliable truck?

I'm curious what others think of the fords in comparison to the chevy.

I do pull a gooseneck trailer from time to time pulling loads of hay and sometimes medium sized tractors.

I traded my 2006 Duramax for 2011 Ford 6.7 liter, I have 51K on it, and love it. I run about 16 around town and 18-19 on the highway. It will drop down to 15 pulling trailer.

If you are a regular on hear you know ALLAN is a very smart man.. He has it right Ford and you will not be sorry.

I'm not smart at all.

However, I've worked in both camps and owned both breeds. The differences are staggering. :>)

I have been a Chevy/GMC guy my whole life. Even to the point of really disliking Ford. That started to gradually change over the past few years, and I ended up buying a Ford last year.

I like Dodges, GMs and Fords. They all have great qualities. But, when I started comparing them side by side, I felt that Ford is making a better truck right now. My 2 cents.

I've had zero issues with the chevy and love the truck, but the replacement cost difference between chevy/ford is significant. The ford is more affordable than the chevy.

I've been a chevy man for 30+ years but I'm not opposed to changing.

The folks I have spoke with never really use a truck for what it is designed to do, so their input just don't hold much value to me.

I'm familiar with Allan's input and value his and everyone's input. I just want the best bang for my buck. I really could care less about die hard opinions, but I will listen to all input.

Thanks for everyone's insight!

I can't give an opinion on the diesel engines but I've had and have GM, Dodge and Ford in gassers and have worked them hard. Hands down the Fords stand up to abuse the best for me.

That may be one reason Ford has been the best selling truck for nearly 40 years and didn't need to be bailed out.

I had ZERO problems with the Chevy, I just liked the way the super duty rode and pulled a trailer. It seemed to handle the weight better.

We actually own 2 super duties, one 2011 that I drive, and one 2012 that my business partner drives. Both trucks have about 50K on them, and no problems with either.

I have just upgraded mine with Banks economy tune. It does not get any better mileage, but seems to have better throttle response.

I have a 2011 6.7 that I now know why Ford does not put a fuel sticker on it. If I am empty and not pulling anything and with a tail wind I can get 15. I have a Spartan set at 20%, AFE filter, and removed the exhaust and replaced it with a 5" SS. I have not removed the ERG yet but plan to do so soon. I went from normal 13MPG to 13.5MPG and spent a lot to do it. Yes, it does have lots of power. It rides good with air bags but sagged with a light load before. It is a King club with short bed and SRW 20". With the fuel milage doing so poorly, the small fuel tank doen"t go very far. I have 3 guys begging for me to sell it to them because of the looks but it is hard to keep clean. Everybody that REALLY tells it like it is is doing about what I am. I used to think that farmers exaggerate about yields but I think mileage takes first place. I write down every tank that I have run through this thing, not the dash figures.

2011 GMC 3500 HD with the 6.0L gas.
Can't vouch for the diesels, but this truck is beating up on the Ford I used to have in so many ways. Trailer and tractor together weigh somewhere around 18000 lbs. The only reason the truck looks like its sagging in the back is the front leveling kit I have in it. Handling while loaded is still very good. In my opinion, GM is making a really strong truck right now.

I stick with the 6.5 ltr td GM diesels, they are cheap to buy and easy to fix,...been driving them since 96.
With a few mods and a good tune they'll pull up to 20.000 lb .
Just don't be in a hurry,...which is never good anyway

Sons GMC lost the engine at 130,000.Antifreeze in one cylinder, broken flex plate.Found some info on bad cylinder heads.06 3/4 ton.Made it past the warranty.

Anything but a GM, or a foreign piece of crap.

GM cured me of buying anything from them after my new 1980 Caprice. Biggest piece of crap ever built, and they would not stand behind it. Have always bought Fords or Dodges ever since. No regrets.

I am really strong on FORDS.

I'm a ford guy and I think the ford is better than a GM but not by much. For one thing the paint on ford trucks stink. Can't address the diesel question but I don't think the new ford diesel engine has been out long enough to get a good reading on it's longevity/reliability yet.Diesel engines in most P/U trucks around here (NNY) are used mostly to haul around the owners ego.

I personally am not impressed with any newer trucks on the market today closest one I'd think about is a 6.4 powered ford. But I think I'll keep my old 99 7.3 with a 6sp its been a great truck so far

Kyle, I am looking for a 05 Duramax, contact me before you sign any paper on what ever you decide on. I am looking for a crew cab, prefer a 4X4. Jim

Bashing GM probably won't help you, but I've had two cars in the last 40 years that had serious mechanical breakdowns that required a shop and lots of $. Both were Chevrolets. one a car and one a truck. Their products are probably better now, but it was a lifetime swear-off.

There are lots of trucks to chose from, but myself, I would not include GM on my list.
