O/T ABS Light on my 1998 Blazer

My ABS light is on in my 1998 Blazer. I have checked both front ABS sensors and they are good.
Is there a 3rd sensor some where that I am over looking because there are none on the rear wheels. This is an S10 4 door, 4 wheel drive model.
Twice I have driven down my driveway and the light was off then when I go to stop at the end of the driveway the ABS kicks in and pulsating the brake pedal as if I were in a skid, but that's not the case. Any help is greatly appreciated.

ABS light on my 1995 Ranger has been on for ten years. Came on when I plugged in my trailer and touched the brake the first time. Dealer got it off briefly, came back on. I just let it shine, along with Check Engine light.

Hey John.

I have found that sometimes with 4wd vehicles the abs light comes on when one of the front hubs gets worn.

It makes the sensor go out of alignment with the ring.

You might try driving down a smooth, straight road and listen for a rumble from one side or the other.

Good luck,

Brad

The third sensor is most likely the vehicle speed sensor that also is used for the speedometer.

A scan tool could pick up this problem quickly by watching the data from the sensors as you are stopping.

The problem is most likely caused by loss of signal on one of the sensors when the brakes are applied. Usually this happens at slow speed. The brakes will work fine when slowing until you reach about 10 - 15 mph and then the ABS kicks in. I had that happen once on a C7500 truck. Going down hill to a stop sign and just before stopping the ABS kicked in and I went right through the intersection.

If the front sensors are adjustable make sure there is not too much air gap. Loose wheel bearings may cause this problem also. Rusted tone rings may also cause a problem but that usually shows up by turning on the ABS light starting first at higher speeds.

There seems to be a common problem with GMs. Look for rust build up under the wheel sensor. The rust will lift the sensor and it screws up the air gap. Clean and reinstall.( The rear wheels have one sensor in the rear end center pig)

Very common problem with GM trucks. I'm sure the smaller SUV's are the same. Over time rust builds up between the internal reluctor ring and the sensor, so (I assume) the sensor doesn't see any movement and thinks the brakes locked the wheel up. Cleaning the rust out doesn't always prove to be a permanent fix, and sensors can be expensive, so price a bearing while your at it, the difference may not be that much. If the smaller SUV's are like the trucks/large SUV's, (same transmission), it will use the VSS as the rear sensor.

I pulled the abs fuse out of mine. Now I have good brakes and a much harder pedal.

Until you can get it on a scanner so you can see what wheel is showing false wheel speed pull the ABS fuse...

Its much safer to drive that way over one that goes into false activation as you now know...

ABS light came on with my '03 Tahoe several years ago. Mechanic said I needed a new front hub...cost was way up there.

I now have normal brakes like before ABS was invented. Glare at night of orange light doesn't bother me since I put a piece of black electronic tape on the dash covering the light.

State inspections don't apply to us who are lucky enough to live in this rural area.

Can't do that in the live free or die state they plug a computer into the OBD and all data goes to D.O.T. then results come back nothing gets by.

At the bottom front, driver's side of the ABS motor, unplug the connector.

Then just ignore that damned light. :>)
