Good deed for the day

Was cuttin grass this morning by the road and a guy pulls up in a car and says his van is stuck in the mud on the old unopened road allowance next to my farm.
Turns out he was trying to get around a car accident and his GPS told him to take this road.
Get the tractor out and go down to see. He was buried right down so the water was coming in his doors. To make matters worse he was hung up on a tree stump.
Hook a chain up to his trailer hitch and lifted the back up and dragged him a 1/2 mile to the pavement.
I couldn't believe how happy he was. Guess he thought his van was stuck for good.
Glad I could help him out.

Do you know for a fact that his story was legitimate or just trusting his word? He could have been up to no good and got stuck and made up a reason that he was there, and that is why he was so happy to get out. Don't mean to be too negative but this does happen, I have seen it.

Thank goodness you had something to hook onto, instead of a plastic bumper. I pulled an empty semi out this winter. He was trying to do a u turn at a tee instead of turning left or right and backing up. It was an old beater Freightliner and he had his kid with him. My 8400 snaked him out easy. This summer a freind said that was a good deed I had done. I didn't know he was there when it happened. I appreciate that he came forward to thank me. I never do things like that for praise but that was the way I was raised. I have been it binds when someone did that for me for just a thanks. Thank you for helping him. At least he didn't have his girlfriend with him out on a side trip.

I used to pull people out of a ditch. Now I"m leery as it could be a person under the influence, a stolen vehicle, or an unlicensed driver and I would be an accessory. Sorry but this is what it is like these days. I always call the Highway Patrol and if they say it is ok then I will pull them out.

Hi farmerjohn,
I guess it was the night before. He had his wife and two kids. I believe what he says.
I think 99% of people are honest. Might bite me in the butt one day, but I would hope someone would help me in the same situation.
When I have my GPS on it always tells me to take this road.

It sounds to me like he is truthful as the pieces are fitting together, like I said I don't like to be negative as I also give people the benefit of the doubt but life is different now than when I grew up.

Good for you Martin! Glad it worked out. Everything goes around.

The last one I pulled out - the phone rang at midnight. A guy I knew said his buddy was stuck about a mile from my house on an old forestry road. A little while later the stuck guy called, but wouldn't give me his name. Against my better judgement, I went out to start the tractor, and it was raining. 630 John Deere. Sopping wet, I got back to where they were stuck. They were liquored up pretty good, a man and a woman, married, but not to each other. She was worried about her kids that were home, asleep in bed. He wasn't worried about anything. I had hay forks on the tractor, and I had to pick the tractor front end up to get enough traction to pull their Suburban up the hill - couldn't pull them down because they were slid up against a tree trunk. Got them to the top where we could all turn around, and I gave them a blistering speech about parenting, drinking, adultery, and bothering people in the middle of a rainy night. When you get home from an escapade like that, you don't just flop into bed and go right to sleep, you gotta put the tractor up, undress on the porch, shower, and then you'll lie there reliving every single second for the next couple of hours. It was the last night-time pull for me. My son has a four wheel drive wrecker, and he can fool with them. IF he wants to. . .

Unfortunately, I don"t stop to help anymore. Too many crooks pretend to be in trouble and when you stop to help, you get robbed.

Can"t pull anyone out anymore either. They claim you damaged their vehicle and sue.

What shame.

The way vehicles are made today, I would never hook on to any of them!!! Too much risk for liability. Have them call a wrecker that has liability insurance.
