I looked at the crops when I drove through Chandler this morning. It was weird to see the corn tasseling already.

They had corn, alfalfa and cotton in rotation fields. The soil looked pretty good after doing that. It was much better than the desert soil right next to the fields.
 
Believe it or not, the only difference between the soil that the crops are growing in and the soil in the desert is water. I live in SE Cochise county AZ and farming has always been important here. land that has not been farmed in years is being put back into production. The land is cleared of natural vegetation that has grown back,the old concrete irrigation ditches are removed, pivot watering systems are installed and within a very short time alfalfa is being cut and corn is growing.
 
SE Cochise County.... around Bisbee/Douglas? Only been there once, didn't remember any crops, mostly range land. I backbacked all over the Chiracahuas, though, beautiful country. I found a big cat track in snow about 10 feet from my sleeping bag in the morning!!
 
Chandler is the next suberb over from where we live in Gilbert.

The first time I came to Phoenix in 1970, there was a lot of open space between Phx and Chandler. Very little farm land left in the area now. Seems a shame to let the developers gobble up all of the flat farmland when there is so much other marginal land that they could build houses on.
 
In the late 1990"s we were in your area and I remember seeing irrigated corn..We went to Cochises Stronghold and thru Apache Pass..It was too late to go to Ft Bowie..
 
I love the big hole in the ground there at Bisbee . That part of the country can be productive if you can get the water. Going west over toward Yuma lots of farming. That whole area south of Phoenix down toward Casa Grande is really a great area.
