1953 Farmall Super C

We just bought 20 acres and the guy included a 1953 Farmall Super C.

He said it ran fine and used it to mow with (Woods Belly Mower)

Questions:
1. I put a battery in and the starter just spins but doesn't seem to hit the flywheel. Rebuild? remove it and Clean it w/?? ??

2. Is there a good spot to buy parts or just hit and miss on Ebay?

3. Anyone have pictures or ideas how to attach a front plow (for snow plowing)?

4. Where is a good spot to read up on the 40's and 50's Farmalls? Super C vs H vs A...

Thanks
Brent

Right here on YT is a great place to be (over on the Farmall IH forum above is far more specific and the correct place in YTMAG.
Manuals and parts are available here as well.
The Starter likely has a broken Drive pinion (or stickey needing cleaned (no lube needed)) There is a new style cushion hub drive pinion that is far superior. Make sure the battery is fulley charged, a low battery (or new and not charged) will spin W/O engaging. Jim

Here's a plow pict. maybe, sounds like your flywheel ring gear or starter drive might be junk.
A Super C is a fun tractor, if it's got a fasthitch you will need to spend the next ten years of weekends looking for hitch attachments.
Mines a 1953 too.

I would remove it and spray some WD40 the drive just mite be dry from setting. Make sure the batt is charged and both ends of the cables are clean.

gab - Do you have more pics?

Saw these online somewhere and was wondering what the setup was?!

(I guess I'm too new and can't post pics yet...)

The owner said it was 12 volt, but since the battery and alt are gone, I had to pull the ignition coil and it has 12 volt on it.

I flipped the cables and it does the same thing. Right now it has "+" grounded and "-" to the starter (as it would have been)

Once I get it actually running, I'm gonna take a break from my cars and house and tear it down and restore it. (My wife wants it to drive around and take to county fairs and local farming shows) So, i'll have to replace and redo all the hacked up wiring, gauges and what not...)

Totally agree, YT's price on a IH C starter drive is half the price of NAPA's.

The IH C is a very simple tractor. Lots of help here or on Farmall.

Growing up I didn't realize it was possible for letter series tractors to start themselves - we always pulled ours to start. I mean always. I never remember that tractor starting itself even once.

Pull it and see if it will run. If it runs well you will be more eager to sort out the starting issue.

Don't be bashful about getting out the wrenches and digging in. There's only so much you can do by "armchair quarterbacking" your tractor problems.

The starter is two bolts, one cotter pin, and one battery cable. 5 minute job to get it out and SEE if there is anything obvious wrong.

Once the starter is out the gear on the end should flip back and forth freely and easily. No springs should be broken.

Look in the starter hole. The teeth on the flywheel should look clean and straight. Some wear is ok though.

...Just a quick reply to this thread...

I went ahead and started throwing parts at it and after I replaced the cap, rotor, points, plugs and wires (etc...) it fired right up.

I also replaced the fuel strainer, fuel line and elbow (because I broke it off..). I also found out that it uses gravity to allow the fuel to fill the bowl with fuel. (I temp used a rubber hose that was higher then the sediment bowl and couldn't figure out why my carb was dry after 5 mins of running...)

I'm gonna start a new post with new questions, but she runs and drives now...
