Cherry Tree Starts

Wondering if I can just plant some cherry seeds to get a tree started? We have a sweet red cherry and I don"t think it is a hybrid. Do you just take some of the ripe cherries and plant them hull and all or should you seed them and just plant the seed? Anybody ever tried it?

Grew a half dozen grapefruit trees from my Mother's tree in Mesa AZ.years ago. They didn't bloom for seven years. Gave 4 away to neighbors. In ten years we had the best fruit in Orlando.

Call your local county ag agent and/or your state forestry service and ask them. They should be able to refer you to someone who can help.
It's what you pay them for.

my sil took apple seeds put them in wet paper towel and put them in the refrigerator for 6 weeks - they have sprouted and now he is putting them in small pots. We are trying the same thing with Bing Cherry seeds.

Your apple tree plants will need to be grafted onto a different root. I think mountain ash is used but it is about 45 years since I saw any grafting done! (I am 51 now!)Don't know about cherry but our friend google might be able to help?

I am surprised they germed at 36 degrees. I germ my sweet corn seeds and popcorn seeds in wet towels in zip locks on the in ths sun porch.

The "ehow.com" answer is to clean (wash) the pits and put them up to dry. In the fall plant the pits 2" deep. The might sprout in the spring.

If they sprout, don't drive over them with your tractor :)

Only the Stella variety of sweet cherry is self pollinating. If your tree isn't Stella any resulting tree would be a cross.

If you plant them, they will grow. However, when you buy one at the store, they have been grafted onto rootstock, the same way apples are. I guess the only way to know exactly what you will end up with is to try, it can't hurt.
