OT: heat pump problem

heat pump is outside the house, using the air conditioning now. AC won't go off when the inside temperature goes down to the thermostat setting. Seems to be cooling the house ok but always before it shut off when the temp reached the desired setting. Now it runs all the time it is switched on, even tho the right temp has been reached. Have to switch it off at nights. Anybody familiar with the problem?

Check the contactor on the out side unit see if it is welded together. It could be the themostat keeping the contact close. Or a shorted wire. If u weed eater is good on the control wire from the house. Tear the crap out of them. Where r u turning it of at. The breaker or themostat if it at the themostat. Shorted wire or stat. At the breaker contactor

It sound like a themostat. Is it digital or the old style. Look at the bulb inside see if they are clear or cloudy. .Digital try resetting it Take cover off most had a reset button And if all else fail replaced themostat.

When u turn stat up does it turn the unit off. If it an old bi metal stat. Check for level might be out of cal. The thermometer on front could be wrong. Check with a good thermometer.

Check the inside air filter cleaned the outside. Coils. At nite check the line going to the out side unit at nite make sure there not frozen up

old style thermostat, mercury in tubes, one tube above the other. Bulbs are clear. GMC brand

yes, when stat is turned up the unit shuts off. Thermometer on front is a bi-metal mounted to the plastic cover & is accurate by checking with a good thermomater, but stat thermomater is not connected to anything; merely shows the temp. As I said below, it is 2 mercury tubes.
