Can't make hay

We had rain on Tues, dry on Wed. Just cannot get enough of a dry window to get the hay - ground is so wet that once the hay is down it'll suck the water up.

You're not the only one. There's lots of hay up here in central Michigan yet. I've seen some down that has been there a while and it's getting ugly. People chopping have gotten theirs up, but have tore up alot of fields, including mine, doing it.

I was lucky enough to get about 7-8 acres of grass hay in by last Monday, but it was a mad scramble I wouldn't of done if I hadn't run out of hay!

I have two fields that I had to cut due to weed infestation - WHITE CHAMPION. First field was almost dry after a week and two raking. Baled it in anticipation of rain. No way is that going into my barn. Going to feed right off the wagon.

Cut second last night - raining tonight.

Same story here in s.w. Pa. We can't get one day in a row of hayweather. Haven't rolled a wheel in a week. Did get about 1200 baled in late May and very early June. For that, I'm thankful.

We took a chance and got our last 20 acres done today we are done with our hay most of the time here in Tn at the end of May a lot of my neighbors are still fighting the weather hopefully they will get done soon now we have to go back and replant some beans that got flooded out last week.

I'm not sure what you mean, 0%, 20%, 10%, 0% is about good as any forecast I've ever had haying unless there are no hours of sun on those days.

We might (fingers crossed) have a hay cutting window coming up here in NWIA starting Sunday. Time will tell. Jim

I was going to start dropping our 1st crop for haylage tonight, but Dad can't get a bagger lined up until next weekend, so it's gonna have to wait. While eating supper at Mom & Dad's we started to get a down pour, so I guess I wouldn't have been able to cut anyway.

Frustrating, but it's still not in bloom so it'll be ok to go for another week, as long as the rain tonight didn't pound it down.

Around here that is a GOOD forecast. I used to mow if there was mostly sun and 30% or less chance of rain. A year or two ago I retreated to 20%. So if I were you I would be knocking down plenty of hay on some of my dryer ground on Mon. eve. if the forecast is still good. I mow in the evenings a lot because that is when the hay has the most energy in it and the first rays of the next mornings sun are drying the hay. Good Luck!!

agreed - except that we have had so much rain that it won't dry- just wick it up from the wet ground. It's chest high and thick too.

I can't make hay either, equipment is just sitting! Ready to go, but the ground I'd soaked!

Did 9 big rounds late today and then cut more to do on Friday. Down here at the Lake of the Ozarks it is hot and dry but the weather guessers are calling for rain starting Saturday till Tuesday. Hope they are right I need a break. LOL. Cut hay till around 8:45 tonight and boy do I hurt

Thursday marks 4 weeks of rain at least every other day or two in central MN. SE MN has it worse- some farms.... no corn planted yet. I"m done with beans on my few acres, my renter has fields he can"t plant. BUT! I seldom gripe about too much rain. RAIN MAKES GRAIN. Sure, it causes problems, and lost crops, but I"ve seen enough drouth. 30 years of dairying......wet years, weeds grow better than some crops- they can be chopped and ensiled.....cows can eat weeds and produce milk. Cows can"t eat dust. I"ll take excess rain over drouth any day!

I hate to say it, but it's still early June. We don't generally start cutting dry hay till the 15th or so at the earliest. It's going to be later this year. I just hope I can get some second cut this year.
