buying over the internet sight unseen

I have looked at a couple of Gators locally, even driven 3 hours for machines in good running but poor shape considering the asking prices. Cracked or missing fenders seem to be common.

As I start to look further afield, I am waiting for a call-back from some kind of dealer in Iowa, I am of course in MA, do you ask for lots of pictures and cross your fingers?

Think finding someone local, per the below is a good idea. Photos are nice but can be misleading, sellers go from honest to everything less, as a rule its never the best option. I think photos help ID something you may be interested, general idea of condition, some things you can tell are as described or in the condition you may desire.

I think given what this item is, its use and both recreational or utility, a used one, you want eyes on it that are familiar with what you are looking at.

I bought my D7 caterpillar like that, seemed I had enough information on it, components matched the hours, but about after 15 hours, the master clutch let loose, pilot bearing gone. Had I known the clutch issue prior, I'd have haggled a bit, but still wanted this particular low hour original tractor, to me it was part of the deal, seller may have known, maybe not, he contacted me not all that long ago, just to say hello I think and I told him about what happened, I never heard back, but hoped too, seemed like a very honest person, the deal went as planned, and I never thought badly of the person because of it, given the situation, I may have missed it if I went and looked at it myself. Just one of those things, and the rest of the tractor was definitely low hour, track adjusters never been let out since new, pedals show no wear, hour meter original and working, diesel ran like a top, started easy even in cold weather.

I did the same with my F600, had more rust when I saw it, but ok... I could have found a cleaner one, but I did what I needed to do and the darned thing more than paid for itself.

I don't recommend buying sight unseen if you have high expectations, but sometimes when the information you have adds up, not going to break the bank if it is a flop, by the same token, one should not be foolish with money either.

I think the most remarkable thing in my deal with that old Cat, was the trucker who hauled it. From a cold phone call, we did not know each other, or have ever done business before, he picked it up, had a 3020 JD on the front of the deck, and delivered it here, I gave him a personal check, + $100 bonus for a 1200 mile haul over width, Target Transport - Steve Sabo, hard to believe but entirely true, its the way things should be but with so many dishonest folks out there, I was really surprised he'd just pick it up and take a check when it arrived, both the seller and he, sure seemed like good ole honest folks, that you would want to do business with again, I always hoped the seller was not put off by what I told him, ( in case you're reading LOL !) was still a good deal, I've yet to get it repaired, but am close.

Figured I'd share that, but good luck with your endeavor to get a Gator, handy thing to have, hope you find what you need !

Barker Implement, Winterset, Iowa

It's enough money I am not sure I will go thru with it and shipping it 1,300 miles isn't going to help!

Barker implement got their start in Lenox, Iowa, probably 60 years or so years ago. They started with not only John Deere, but also had Minneapolis-Moline and Dodge cars and trucks. They now have at least 6 different dealerships located around Iowa. Winterset is probably the latest acquisition.

OK 2 stories.
1) Bought a Oliver 1655 from a well known dealer in Pennslyvnia (sp) sight unseen because I wanted a 1655 and the dealer had a good rep. Man told me they had been running it around the yard and it was working fine. After it came I drove up my lane to see how it was running about 100 feet when it started knocking so I put in the building. Wouldn't restart. Pulled it down and 1 piston had replaced with some sanding and the pan was caved in to the bottom of the crank throw. Local mechanic told me that a repair like that would last about 20 minutes. I put in a long block and it is running fine. Had I looked at it might have started knocking on the dealer's yard.
2) Bought an Oliver 2255 off the photo ads here again sight unseen but had photos. It's been a very good tractor. Only thing i didn't see was the notch in the frame to remove the starter. Bothered but again the local mechanic assured me that wasn't all that uncommon and would not hurt the tractor strength. Recently, several years later, I had some work done and discover the slow brakes were caused by a leaking pump under the radiator--I would never have known that had I looked at it.
So 2 stories with slightly different results and I am still not put off on buying sight unseen. Just have to take as much precautions as possible and trust the seller to be honest.

Buy a new one.The real nice used ones are priced only a couple thousand under new price. It's a deductible expense if you farm or have a business.
I've seen several average ones, scratches, worn tires etc at auction and they still bring in the 4500 range.

I have drove alot of local miles looking at "rust free" cars and trucks advertised and they even had pictures ! They all look good in the pictures !!!!
Plus when in person I could see where several of them were body damaged and repaired or patched up.
On the Gator topic someone had one listed local on craigslist looked kinda tuff but was cheapest I've seen in an ad ,but was still like $ 2000 ?? later I seen an ad from someone who actually went and looked at it and warned others about the rusted out frame !
Farther ahead to do like Mom did and buy a small 4x4 pickup. Cheaper price, more room and has heat and a/c.

I bought a small Kubota excavator sight unseen with only pictures and talking to the fellow. Saw the ad right here on YT. Forget the guys name, but he was a stand up guy and told it like it was. That one worked out good. Never spend more then you can afford to lose. Just like gambling !!!

Never could figure out doing something that foolish. I don't buy anything but maybe a few small parts sight unseen and I won't sell anything to somebody unless they look at it first either. Just ASKING for trouble and hard feelings either way.

Just remember, when you buy used It's "As is-Where is" unless you get something that says otherwise in WRITING.

At the cost of labor and repair oarts nowadays, I would think real hard about a new one before I spent much money for a used one. I used to buy used when parts were cheap, but now I buy new and take good care of the machine and figure I come out money ahead with fewer headaches. Just my opinion.

I personally looked at them. Nice, but a used one in good shape is nearly impossible. I looked on the Deere website a few weeks back to see what a new Gator costs. I almost puked, $ 25,000 for a new diesel Gator. I could see paying $10k for a new one, but $25k. I would rather just buy a new compact tractor for that. But I dont have 25K to throw around. What do you use this for other than a glorified golf cart?

Makes my $800 golf cart seem cheap. I would pocket $24k and buy another golf cart when this one is no longer repairable.

Bill,
Last year I wanted to buy a gator, at least I thought I did until I got to looking at them closer. My sister has a 15 year old gator. She likes JD green. Has everything JD, backhoe, mowers, even a JD mower that looks like a dixie chopper. They have a HVAC business and must do lots of work for the JD dealer.

At the end of last year I purchased a 2012 kawasaki 4010 mule for $2500 off normal list, end of year model. Which was about $2000 more than what I could find a used 2x4 gator for.

Well, my mule has 4x4, hi-low tranny, differential lock out, power steering, hyd brakes on all 4, 2 cylinder, fuel injected, water cooled, bigger dump bed, seating for 3, not bucket seats, roll cage.

My sister's gator, rear brakes only, smaller dump bed, bucket seats, no hi-low, no 4x4, no water cooled, no power steering, no roll cage, exposed tranny belt, golf cart with a motor.

Not to start a war, but I'm glad I went with a new mule over a used gator. I love JD green, learned to love Kawasaki red.

There is a place in Salem, Il that is a large ATV dealer, ATV and more. May want to check him out at the end of 2013 and see what kind of deals he has. Sure others will have similar deals too.

BTW, I think a gator uses a kawasaki engine.
Good luck. I used searchtempest.com and looked a long time for used gator.

Seams to me, it would have to be very good deal for the quality to buy one that far from home, as you still got to get it home sight seen or not!!!

If you ask me, Id say a little patience and you can find one closer to home.

Also, my dad worked on some gators for the nursery down the street, and used some metal, pop rivits and a soder gun to
fix up the fenders. Whole lot cheaper than the 500 deere wants for new plastic and with a small can of green paint for the visiable rivits, you gota look twice to spot the repair!!
All I can say, is what was Deere thinking to use plastic? $$$ of course!

I bought a JD 3010 from them and bought several parts from them too. They helped me out with a trailor when I needed to pick up another tractor. They are good guys. Let me know if I can help in any way. I'm 4 miles east of Winterset.
