Standard number of links in a TD18a Track

I picked up a couple of old TD18a"s a couple of months ago. Once undercarriage has 38 links, and the other one has 40.

The 40 link undercarriage has a Bucyrus Erie Bull-grader attached.

Does anyone know how many links the TD18a"s had, when shipped from the factory? or if lengthening them out was standard practice when attaching the dozer unit?

Man that has been 40+ years ago but before I read your post the 38 was in my mind. NOW did they add roller frame or make it longer for the dozer blade, I am just not sure.
 
More likely, links were removed as chain stretched to maintain tensioner function. Not the best fix, but have seen it done on several machines. Unsure as to specs on your's.
 
Skye, if you phone up an IHC dealer and ask for the parts department they can probably tell you what you need to know. If that doesnt work you can phone the outfits that sells jobber undercarridges. They usually have all the info
