OT:2001 Chevy 2500 - crazy guages

just replaced the fuel pump in 2001 chevy 2500HD. Starts & runs good but 12 seconds after the ignition key shuts off, the fuel gauge & water temperature gauge come back up but not to their true settings. Doesn't matter whether key is left in or pulled partially or fully out. Also the oil pressure gauge doesn't fall back to zero but doesn't stay up at the true pressure either. Didn't do anything other than replace fuel pump & disconnect the battery. I can use the battery disconnect box when I stop it but would like for it to work like its supposed to work. Need ideas please!

That is the way it is supposed to work. When you shut the truck off, the gauges pull all the way down. The IPC does not power down immediately, it takes a few seconds longer. After the IPC powers down, the gauges relax to where ever they happen to go. At key on, the gauges shouldnreturn to the correct settings. If you are saying the gauges don't read correctly when the truck is running, that will require some checking. 01 IPCs are pretty reliable.

Disconnect the battery for a few minutes and make sure it is fully-charged.

Reconnect and try again.

GM had all sorts of trouble with those gauges. They are NOT gauges in the conventional sense, but
"stepper motors" and if they get out of step during a "hard start" (cranking long cranking/low battery) they get flaky.

Also, the stepper motors fail requiring a $$$$$$ instrument panel at the stealer, or you can buy the motors and install them yourself. GOOGLE "Silverado gauge problems" for LOTS more info.

yup, cranking with a low battery. I did disconnect the battery &fully charge it. Still guages come back up after the key is pulled out.

Not a GM guy and not certain
about this but it seems to me that I've seen this happen on many GM vehicles after shut down.I'd say it's normal.

I've had problems with my '05's speedometer and lately the tach. Had the speedo fixed pretty reasonably by a small independent shop my mechanic found, it was about $125 and they took it over and brought it back to the shop where they were doing some other work. Tach was showing goofy numbers, needle even got stuck beyond the max rpm reading. Seems to have reset itself and works right, for now.

If you think Chevys have problems, you should have an early 2000s Ford Expedition or pick-up. Glitchy glitchy electronics in those things (I have a 2000 Expy), you never know what is going to be working or not. Sometimes the radio or the blower motor just come on by themselves, sitting, no one around, no key in the ignition!

NOT sure I originally understood your post... do the gauges all read correctly when the engine is running?

If so, nor worries about where they "land" after shutdown, 'cuz, as I said, they are stepper motors and will remain where the 'puter told them to be even after they are powered down..

The fuel gauge on my 2001 HD gets wierd fairly often. It will drop to below empty so that the Low Fuel warning light comes on, then go back up to half full or whatever. Does not seem to be any pattern to it. I just try to remember how much gas I really have in it all the time.

I bought this truck used, leather seats and all the extras. So far the drivers seat has crapped out, fortunately where I need it to be. But the wife can't reach the pedals. Just had the driver's window motor replaced. Figure its only a matter of time before the next electronic gadget busts.

My brother found a bad ground wire by the alternator. That solved his problem.

my other Chevy 2500 (yr 2000) does that. A common happening on 10 yr old chevys. Usually right after I fill it up, it goes to 'empty' but at other odd times also. Its caused by the float indicator metal strips on the fuel pump inside the gas tank. Lots of trouble to fix & if you do the fuel pump is due to fail anyway so it is best fixed by a new complete fuel pump-$300- plus labor. Takes about 4 hours to do with a good garage set-up if you have good help. There is an excellent youtube video that shows everything you need.

yes, they work fine when running. 24 hours later I found they had returned to zero, tho the oil pressure gauge locked up at 25 when the engine had been off for 24 hrs. That gauge also works when running.
