No Brakes!!!

Haven"t ran my 4230 much since the first of March when I finished haying the cows. Got it out today, cleaned it up, changed the oil, fill her up with diesel and hooked to the hay cutter. Started into the hay patch, pushed the brakes and the pedals went to the floor. Panic caused me to stomp on them and after a couple of stomps they had pressure and worked. But everytime I pushed them they go to the floor and have to be pumped acouple of times. John Deere 4230. Is my brake valve dieing?

No idea what sort of brakes you have but if they are hydraulic, you have air in the lines. Whee its coming from? wheel cylinders or master are the most likely culprits.

Brakes only hold you back anyway! LOL No, being serious now.....I agree it has to be air in your hydraulic braking lines or if the brakes have not been touched since the last time you used the tractor, then you have an issue with your seals on some of the cylinders, most likely the master cylinders. It could be that incorrect brake fluid has been added at some time and it is breaking down the rubber seals thus letting oil bypass. Pumping will get you a tempory brake, but it sounds strange that both sides are gone?? Do you have to add oil? If yes then you have an external leak, either from one of the lines or at a union or even at a wheel cylinder. By the way I know nothing about John Deeres , but do get it sorted as it could be very dangerous!.

First thing to do is bleed the brakes. The bleeders(parts key #1) are on the axle housings. Will brakes hold if applied together?

By way if clarification- The tractor in question, and I would say most "modern" American larger tractors- have "hydraulic" brakes integral with the tractor hydraulic system.
It sounds like you're describing what appears to me to be a more European design- and that is "hydraulic" brakes which are independent from the tractor hydraulic system, therefore having their own reservoir. I once had an AC 6060(which was mostly Fiat), and now have a CaseIH 5230, that had/have brakes like you describe.
Love your pictures by the way, and just in general like to hear/see about agriculture in other parts of the world. It would be neat to see your area in person. Maybe someday!
