Pioneer Fittings

What is the application of poppet valves versus ball valves?

I bought a used Vermeer WVR14 ground driven rake, the wheels are operated by two individual cylinders with a t-connection, but sometime they work and sometimes they don't. I noticed that one hose has a poppet fitting and the other a ball fitting.

Does this make a difference or is there some other problem?

I tried it on a JD 7800 and a JD 5200 with same results.

Thanks in advance guys!

You mean the ball in the end of the male pioneer fitting? I haven't noticed a difference in the way either one works. If memory serves me right the poppet types I have came from my IH dealer. Could be the poppet ones allow a little more flow for tractors with higher GPM systems. Look at your male fittings closely, especially at that ridge about 1/2" back from the end of the tip. That ridge is what the female coupler locks onto to hold it in. Sometimes the ridge can be worn from years of use and it doesn't hold the male tip into the female coupler all the way. A few thousanths of an inch can make a big difference in flow. I've thrown away perfectly good looking used male tips that won't flow anymore. I'll screw another used tip on and all will be fine. Go figure. Jim

I shop TSC for hyd fittings. Last time in there I noticed two types
of male fittings; one with the ball end and the other with a pin
shaped end. Since this thread is on the subject I decided to
investigate.

Pioneer is a Parker brand. Parker is probably the biggest mfgr of
all kinds of hydraulic accessories and O rings among other
things. They are real big in industry. Used them all the time.

The difference in the two mating schemes is that the ball
bearing is the old style connector. Problem with that is that you
usually have to shut down your tractor and relieve the pressure
to get the fittings to mate.

The Pin shaped end is designed such that you can make
connection with pressures up to 3000# present.

Great. Now we both know and I should have purchased the pin
end the last time I bought connectors. As I recall the price is the
same.

Mark
