OT: Rebuilding tool batteries

Speaking of battery powered tools. I bought a set of Milwaukee tools at a garage sale all there and used very little. Just as the man said two batteries were completely dead and the third only lasted for about 10 minutes. He said to take it to a local battery store and have them rebuilt for $40 each. Had that done and store man said they were better than new. Those of you have been using them for years do you buy new ones or have them rebuilt?

Speaking of rebuilts, I've heard I can take my old tool batteries to an Interstate dealer and Interstate will rebuild them. True? Jim

I'm an repair shop that sells interstate batteries. When the battery man comes around to restock I just send my power tool batteries with him and they rebuild them. Have alot of customers leave batteries also to have done. The cost varies but generally $40-$50 each covers it. My shop tools are snap on. A new battery from them is $150 so the rebuild is well worth every penny.

I have had some rebuilt that worked well, but I have thought of doing my own, but the batteries are so expensive its barely feasible. Even off eBay in large quantity. I was planning to do a cordless vacuum, but we can buy a new one for just a little more, The American way, throw it away.

The batteries in battery packs usually have a thin piece of sheet metal soldered to them connecting them. I've always wondered how you can solder the batteries together without damaging them.

The only time I heard of Interstate rebuilding tool batteries they would start on fire! I buy new

I had 2 Porter Cable 12V lasted 10 yrs. When I had them rebuilt, they lasted less than a year. The batteries to rebuild them can be bought on Ebay cheap. As soon as I find the right size security TORX screwdriver, I'm going to try rebuilding them myself.

I wired a house for my neighbor and somehow ended up with a battery for my DeWalt drill that he had rebuilt by Interstate. I used it for a year before I realized it was his. It worked perfectly, couldn't tell any difference in performancxe at all.

I recently purchased new 18v Ni-Mh 3000 ma-hr battery for $40.85, shipping included from ebay. It's for my dewalt. Why rebuild? My oldest NI-Mh a good 5 years plus, still going strong. Could never get 5 years out of a Ni-cd. Perhaps someone can tell me if they have ever seen a dewalt Ni-Mh. Dewalt makes a charger for the battery, but have never seen a battery made by dewalt.

Person gave me a rockwell 14.4v drill with two dead junk Ni-cd. Owner said the drill never worked from day one. I asked why he didn't return it? Answer, Don't know. Anyone what the drill, come get it.

You have a number of batteries in series. You will find 1 cell dead and reversed polarity.Replacing just the dead cell will fix the battery.

Stephen,
The thin metal strip you see in those batteries is spot welded on using a special welder that does it rapidly and without getting the battery hot.
Soldering them on can damage the batteries if you get them hot.
