no its not about range and trajectory lol its about figuring the amount ov mortar mix needed i need to place another course of top caps on a block wall, its on a 1 part of a playground and the little gravels keep getting kicked out, its just normal size top caps and there are 41 of them in this area how do i figure out how many bags to buy?

Un a bead of PL400 construction adhesive 1 inch inside the perimeter of each cap then place and squish into contact. Mortar is less permanent and way more difficult. Jim

Typically, CMU is 8x8x16, and = .89 SF per each CMU, x 41 CMU= 36.49 or say 36.50 SF.

8.5 or 9.0 cu.ft. of mortar per 100 SF of CMU, is a common figure for mortar with waste % included. So, if I am not way off or wrong with this calculation, say 100 SF/9.0 cu. ft. ( units are not the same, supposed to always keep units the same when estimating) is it 0.09 cu. ft of mortar per sq. ft. ? 0.09 x 36.50 = 3.285 cu. ft. of mortar ? Off the top of my head it seems proportional to the 8.5 or 9.0 cu. ft. per 100 sq. ft. 50 sq ft. would = 4.5 cu. ft of mortar, so at 3.2 cu. ft. it seems logical my math could be right, don't quote me just yet though LOL !

So if there was .75 cubic feet in an 80lb bag = 4.38 bags, say 5 80lb bags ? If there was .88 cubic feet per bag, then 3.2 cu.ft of mortar needed /.88 cu. ft. per bag = 3.6 bags. Typical CMU you are supposed to get around 13 CMU worth of mortar in one 80 lb bag, so 41/13 3.15, maybe I am in the ball park.

Quikcrete has a caculator on their website, I poked around a few sites to refresh my memory on the numbers, to see if my brain could deal with it this morning LOL !

Buy 3. If you are sloppy you will need a 4th.

Here is the Quikrete page on mortar. http://www.quikrete.com/PDFs/DATA_SHEET-Mortar Mix 1102.pdf

i would do that and did think of it but.. this wall was "designed" by one of the ladies in the subdivision, and it is contoured, like a slow s, so there has to be a pie shaped piece of mortar between the edges of the caps, thanks to all the guys for their help, im going to buy 5 bags due to having to do the pie shapes, there not very big, just a little , and if i have a bag or so left over im sure i can find a use here on the farm for it lol just didnt know how to figure out how much to get 5, or 10, bags 10 does seem excessive lol, im keeping this post so i wont need to ask again for the formula to figure this

I might use concrete and sand (or Sac-rete with no aggrigate) to do the task because it sets up more permanently and is stronger. Jim
